Patience... Patience. Don't think I take your lives for granted. I value all of your lives greatly. The Blood Moon will rise soon, and the weight of your lives will come to bear. You all have a grand purpose...
~ Kim'dael telling Suroh's family her plans and how she's going to use them for the Bloodmoon ritual.
Killing a queen was not part of our agreement. Release me from my debt to your bloodline, and I will kill whoever you like.
~ Kim'dael demanding that Karim release her from her mercy debt binding while holding Janai hostage.

Kim'dael, also known as the Bloodmoon Huntress, is a supporting antagonist in the Netflix animated series, The Dragon Prince.

She is a moonshadow elf set on getting blood from other beings to become more powerful during the Blood Moon. She was also the leader of the Order of the Blood Moon, who lost her power after Avizandum had her cult abolished and her servants were killed, with her being the sole survivor.

She is voiced by Laara Sadiq.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

During the reign of the archdragon Luna Tenebris, Kim'dael was the leader of a cult of moonshadow elves called the Order of the Blood Moon, who committed blood rituals where they would consume the blood of still living creatures for power and to prolong their lives. The other Moonshadow elves, as well as the dragons, became disgusted by their actions. After Avizandum was made king of the dragons, the members of the cult were exiled and later killed, with the exception of Kim'dael.

Her actions would lead her to become infamous and received the nickname Bloodmoon Huntress, which would start getting used in stories for children during the Blood Moon in order to scare them.

The Queen's Mercy[]

In the short story, Kim'dael serves as the main protagonist. There, Kim goes to Lux Aurea to meet Queen Aditi, and when she saw her, she kneeled to the ground and cried for mercy, saying that she regretted her actions and would change if Aditi gave her protection from the dragons.

Aditi, despite knowing Kim's actions, agreed and brought her to the Sunforge. There, Kim'dael tried to kill her, but Aditi put a metal necklace on her, which made her yell in pain and had difficulty in breathing. Kim then accused Aditi of lying, but she told her that she kept her promise, and that that necklace would give her protection from the dragons as they would know she belonged to Aditi and wouldn't dare to provoke her.

Kim then told Aditi that she would kill her, but the necklace tightened around her neck, forcing Kim to become obedient to whatever Aditi wanted. Then, Aditi told Kim that she would have to do many things to be freed from her binding and forgiven for her crimes, and that she would need to serve her and her heirs. Aditi ended the conversation by saying Kim to pray her descendants would be more merciful towards Kim than she was.

The Bloodmoon Huntress[]

300 years later, she had Suroh and his family kidnapped after attacking their caravan and brought them to a mausoleum in the Moonshadow Forest so she could use them for the Blood Moon and drink their blood to become more powerful, but Suroh escaped and went to ask people to help save his family, until he encountered Rayla, whom he asked for help.

Rayla tried to talk to people about the Bloodmoon Huntress and the people that were in danger, but everyone believed she was making jokes about the Blood Moon, and no one believed her. Understanding this, Rayla went to the mausoleum where Kim'dael was holding Suroh's family.

Rayla made a sound that attracted the huntress, which caused her to investigate it, leading to Suroh and Rayla saving the former's family after she left, but she notices them and attempts to kill Rayla, so she decides to bring her attention so Suroh and his family could escape by taking her blood vial.

The Bloodmoon Huntress then gets Rayla and after getting the vial, she threw Rayla off a waterfall, nearly killing her, but Runaan and Ethari save her life and apologize for not believing her. They then go back to the mausoleum and see Kim'dael holding Suroh so he could use him instead for her to drink his blood.

Runnan tries to fight her, but the huntress tells him that she'll allow Suroh to leave if she allows her to drink his blood and kill him. Accepting it, Kim'dael starts to taunt Runaan while Rayla saved Suroh. After finding out about this, she tried to kill Rayla and Suroh, but Runaan and Ethari stop her.

After understanding that she couldn't defeat them and that she wouldn't get blood from anyone, the huntress left, but not before telling Runaan and Ethari that if she ever saw them again, she would kill them.

The Dragon Prince[]

In order to steal the Sun Seed from Janai and heal Sol Regem, Karim and Pharos would go meet her. While there, Pharos told Karim that he didn't think it was a good idea to work with an ilk like that of Kim'dael. She heard this, and threatened Pharos to know what kind of ilk she was, with Pharos responding that it was an evil one. Kim then prepared to kill Pharos, before Karim told her who he was and that if she helped him, he would free her from her binding.

Kim agreed, and so she sneaked in the Sunfire camp. While she stayed unnoticed by others, she would get surrounded by a group of guards while trying to enter the temple where the Sun Seed was, but she would be able to kill most of them, before dragging one of the guards, drinking his blood, and dropping him in the ground when she saw Janai guarding the Sun Seed was supposed to be.

The two then had a fight, but Kim was victorious. However, before she killed Janai, Kim realized that the seed was missing, with Janai telling her that if Kim wanted to know where the Sun Seed was, she would spare her. Kim then decided to bring Janai to Karim, where the latter made a plan to send Pharos to the camp and tell Janai's allies that if they wanted their queen back, they would get the Sun Seed to him through Miyana.

Amaya, however, refused, and dressed herself as Miyana to trick Karim, who almost gets killed by her before Kim held Janai hostage. Karim then told Kim'dael to kill Janai, but she refused as she was afraid that if she did the binding on her neck would become tighter until she died, so Karim tried to free her to no success. Because of this, Karim decided to kill Janai himself.

However, Amaya would stop him, and Janai told Kim that if she killed her, Amaya would kill Karim and their bloodline would end, which meant Kim would die as well. Understanding that she had no way to win anything, Kim'dael let Janai go, but not before telling her that she hoped they would have a more "favorable" meeting in the future. She would then drink some blood and disappear.

Personality[]

Runaan:You are a blight upon Moonshadow history!
Kim'dael: I don't care.
Runaan: Oh, I know you have no respect for any life that doesn't benefit you. We may not stop you-
Ethari: But we can slow you down.
~ Runaan describing Kim'dael during their fight.

Kim'dael is obsessed with blood, to the point of almost being addicted to it. She is also sadistic, as she likes to taunt her enemies and victims, and also desires power more than anything, and is willing to kill children to drink their blood, as seen with Suroh. The huntress is also extremely arrogant, laughing at the Sunfire elves' fear of her when she came to Lux Aurea, and expecting Aditi to give her protection from the dragons without any consequences for her killings.

When Aditi cursed her with a golden necklace in order to make her obedient to Aditi and her heirs, Kim hypocritically accused Aditi of lying about her mercy, when she herself lied about regretting her actions. In the present, Kim hasn't changed, remaining bloodthirsty and arrogant, although capable of being more pragmatic, such as knowing when it will be better to kill people or keep them alive so she could achieve her goals. Despite working for Karim, it's made clear Kim could care less about him and has no loyalty to the former Sunfire prince, leaving him at the hands of his enemies twice.

Trivia[]

  • The Bloodmoon Huntress' name is the combination of the words Kim and Dael. With Kim meaning noble or brave in Anglo-Saxon and Dael means Small Valley in Dutch. This would mean her name means either noble small valley or brave small valley.
    • The first part of her name is very ironic since Kim'dael is one of the least noble characters in the series and has also been shown to be very fearful for her life when she loses the advantage in a fight.
  • It's implied that Kim'dael was the inspiration behind the human myth that elves are literal bloodthirsty monsters.
  • Many fans compare her to a vampire, as Kim'dael shows control over blood as weapons and elongated her nails with it; similar to Castlevania vampires.
