You think I believe a word he says? He's throwing a ton of money at us! It's only thanks to Seong Gi-hun coming to me when he did, paying off his debt and turning around and hiring me that I could even pay any of you or keep the business going.
~ Kim Jeong-rae to Choi Woo-seok.

Kim Jeong-rae (Korean: 김정래), also known as Mr. Kim, is a supporting character in Netflix's South Korean survival thriller series Squid Game. He is a loan shark who extorts money out of his clients, notably Seong Gi-hun, with his henchmen. Originally Gi-hun's cruel debtor, he would force Gi-hun to pay his debt to him before a deadline, punishing him in cruel ways if Gi-hun does not comply.

Gi-hun eventually wins the 33rd Squid Game and pays his debt off to Kim. The former then turns the tables and hires the latter to help him track down the Recruiter.

He is portrayed by Kim Pub-lae.

Biography[]

Season 1[]

At a racetrack, Kim and his guys spotted Gi-hun. Kim demanded the money Gi-hun owed him when they chased him into the bathroom. Gi-hun wanted to give him his money, but a pickpocket had taken it. Gi-hun suffered a nosebleed as a result of Kim hitting him. He then tasted Gi-hun's blood, saying that it was sweet. He demanded Gi-hun to sign a disclaimer and pretended to have mercy on him. He threatened to take Gi-hun's kidney if he didn't pay him back the next month. When Gi-hun informed him that he was out of ink, he signed once again with his blood and sneered as he took the papers.

Gi-hun eventually wins the 33rd Squid Game and repays Kim for his debt.

Pre-Season 2[]

Before the events of season two, Kim befriends Choi Woo-seok and officiates his wedding ceremony.

Season 2[]

It is revealed that Gi-hun has hired Kim. In an attempt to locate the Recruiter, Kim joins a gang of loan sharks. Together with Woo-seok, he searches subways for their target. His leader debates the reason for this in front of his men after he has taken the money. Woo-seok thinks it's made up and thinks they'll discover the salesman. Woo-seok and the rest were thrilled when the leader told his soldiers about the 500 million incentive. Kim and Woo-seok gave a brief lecture on the salesperson and his Ddakji playing the following day. The salesman was located by Kim and Woo-seok after months of searching. They let Gi-hun know about the matter and give him instructions to follow him but stay away from him.

Both fought the Recruiter and lost, in spite of Seong Gi-hun's orders. They were apprehended, restrained, and made to play Russian Roulette and Rock, Paper, Scissors Minus One. Woo-seok refrained from playing out of fear and did not take part. In the last round, his boss gave his life to protect Woo-seok. The recruiter inquired about Gi-hun's whereabouts. Choi is placed on a bed at Gi-hun's headquarters by the recruiter following the interrogation. After Hwang Jun-ho saved him, he told him where Gi-hun was. Gi-hun was later taken into custody by Hwang Jun-ho for the Recruiter's murder. Choi decided to help Gi-hun and Jun-ho in terminating the games to avenge his boss.
