“ | Evil... there's no more fitting word for a place like that. 511 Kinderheim still sends a chill down my spine. | „ |
~ Johan Liebert. |
Kinderheim 511 are the overarching antagonists of Naoki Urasawa's Monster anime/manga series. They are an orphanage in East Germany who performed horrific psychological experiments on children, including Johan Liebert and many others, with the goal of turning them into emotionless soldiers and assassins.
Overview[]
Kinderheim 511, located somewhere in old East Berlin, is a special orphanage managed by both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was not just for regular orphans; it also housed the offspring of criminals, political activists, traitors, and spies, people who were denied even the most fundamental human rights under the Soviet East German rule. As a result, they faced brutal prejudice, with nothing more than grudging care provided to their survival.
The children became isolated from one another as a result of the fear and violence concept, eventually evolving to live exclusively for each child's own self-preservation. It was an experiment laboratory, according to Erna Tietze.
The exhaust fan appears to be one of Mikhail Petrov's most vivid recollections of 511, as it is shown in a flashback when Grimmer mentions the experiments that took place there. The device is positioned at the top of the window that Johan remains in front of during the opening sequence, despite the fact that the exhaust fan itself is not visible during it.
