King Agarnu is the overarching antagonist of Triss, the fifteenth book in the Redwall novel series. He is the cruel and tyrannical yet cowardly ruler of Riftgard, having seized this position after his father, King Sarengo, died in a battle against a mother serpent in a den in Mossflower. He would subject hundreds of creatures to a cruel and harsh life of slavery on the large island, having them do all sorts of hard labor while being whipped by the sadistic Ratguards and starving them regularly. He would subject whoever tried to escape to intense starvation, though one day, when a couple of slaves, Triss and Shogg, managed to escape the island, he had his sadistic daughter, Princess Kurda, and her oafish brother, Bladd, pursue them on a ship sailed by its pirate captain, Plugg Firetail, of the Freebooters while also sending them to go get the crown of Sarengo from the den in Mossflower as he was too scared of the sea to sail it to get it himself, thereby kickstarting the events of the book.

Biography[]

Having used to be the prince of Riftgard as the son of his tyrannical father, Sarengo, Agarnu would assist him in capturing creatures to be taken to the large island as slaves to be subjected to harsh slavery involving them being overworked and toiling away through labor consisting of laying wood, straightening ground, and keeping logs tight and even while being whipped heavily by the Ratguards. He is implied to have expressed distaste in his father's sadistic hobby of executing slaves as shown by how he disregarded Kurda for her sadistic love of executing slaves in the present. In spite of this, he was strongly implied to be sadistic in his treatment of the slaves as well, being talked about by Moku as someone who treated them cruelly and was a particularly bad one. At one point, he was forced to go on a voyage with Sarengo to Mossflower, which he was initially reluctant to do due to his fear of the sea, even wailing like an infant before Sarengo, wanting to toughen him up, said he'd either come back as a king or not at all.

Their objective on the voyage was to plunder a place called Redwall as it was supposed to be full of treasure, but they never found it. Instead, they came across a serpents' den called Brockhall and invaded their home with Sarengo battling against the mother, the great snake Berrussca, and wound up killing her with her killing him while his mace and chain wrapped itself about the tails of her three children, Zassaliss, Harssacss, and Sesstra. The three young snakes would strike again and again at the Ratguards surrounding them, prompting them along with a terrified Agarnu to scramble out with their lives while Sarengo died of wounds from the viper's poison fangs while she died from her spine being broken by his clenched teeth. Agarnu had lost a leg in the process and returns back to Riftgard, being close to death's door when he crawled ashore off the half-wrecked ship's longboat before becoming the next ruler of the island.

He would continue the slavery on the creatures his father had started, with there being a total of hundreds in the present, still being overworked and becoming badly fed and poorly clad, unable to stop and remove long pine splinters from their paws, or bandage scuffed, stone-scarred limbs with tufts of moss and grass. Some would even die from the labor. If they did so much as stop or try to escape, they would be imprisoned in cages which would be half submerged in the cold shallows of the fjord that were fed by icy water from the mountains. Anyone who tried to escape, particularly, would either face death in the dreaded cages from exposure or execution at the sadistic whim of Captain Riftun, their slavemaster or even Agarnu's own sadistic daughter, Kurda, who would contribute to the slavery herself and preventing escape. Only at night would the workers be allowed to halt in their chores with them being led off to the slave quarters beneath Riftgard where they would be fed on a single bowl of grain porridge, some vegetable roots, and a pail of water between every group of ten.

He would often stop quarrels between his daughter and son, with the former often trying to kill the latter, and chide the former when she wastes practicing swords on herrings they've got from the ocean. One time, when this was happening in his chamber, he was reported to by Riftun of Triss, Shogg, and Welfo having made an attempt to escape through building an escape boat before the captain asks what he should do with them. Agarnu snorts and shrugs this off, telling him to do what he wants with them as captain like drowning them before Kurda herself volunteers to execute them by using them for sword practice for her own amusement. Despite regarding his daughter with distaste over this, Agarnu decides to allow this while joking about how this would save spoiling more barrels of herring.

He would also discuss with them about his plan to have them go on the new ship built on a voyage to Mossflower to find out if Sarengo is still alive and to bring back his crown and pawring if he's dead while having Riftun go along with them to ensure that they don't try to kill one another. However, as they emerge from the fortress, they discover Shogg, Triss, and Welfo escaping on the ship. Kurda leads the reinforcement guards to try to capture them and winds up killing Drufo, a close ally of Triss, though she fails as they sail away. Eyeing her father contemptuously, Kurda calls him out as a fool for ruling a kingdom by sea without ships and knowing she was right, Agarnu decided to have the Ratguards light a beacon to lure the Freebooters to them as they have ships and can do the job for them. When they arrive, led by the pirate captain Plugg Firetail, Agarnu tries to have them anchor in the bay and be brought up there to bargain with them, though Kurda instead declares that they drop anchor outside of the bay. Plugg, however, had his crew row him up to the fjord to the jetty where he forced Riftun to let him aboard with his weapons.

Agarnu makes a deal with them to sail Kurda and Bladd with their Ratguards to Mossflower to get the treasure on behalf of getting twice the value of anything brought back from the place before they go on their journey. Unbeknownst to him, Plugg plotted to slay all three of them after getting the rewards to take it along with the reasure before overthrowing them and making slaves to build him and his crew a big fleet of ships. Meanwhile, back on Riftgard, Agarnu would have some slaves be thrown in the dungeons beneath Riftgard and locked there to starve for many days. He even worsens the slavery by forcing the to build a stone tower on the clifftops where he could watch for the Seascab's return and had a new captain, Hydrad, supervise the slavery. Hydrad would use a spearbutt to beat the slaves instead of a whip, beating any beast caught gazing at the sea badly. One morning, the Seascab returned and the slaves would be swiftly marched down to the pier and jetty by the fjord. King Agarnu would be carried out on a litter for he has become too heavy to walk on his false leg as messengers were sent to the fortress. The slaves were forced to kneel at the Fjord edge in rows as they were given a day off work albeit to keep chanting, "Hail Princess Kurda! Hail Prince Bladd! Hail Agarnu, King of all riftgard!" over and over while being laid about with the spearbutt by Hydrad.

Unbeknownst to Agarnu, Kurda, Bladd, Plugg, the Ratguards, and Freebooters (with the exception of Grubbage) would all have been slain on Mossflower with Triss and her friends being the ones on the ship. As such, when the Seascab sailed into the fjord, Triss emerges carrying the sword of Martin the Warrior that she uses to make a battlecry of freedom and leads an army of hares, otters, shrews, and a massive young badger holding a battle-axe in a battle against Agarnu's forces, overwhelming and slaying them. Helpless and pathetic, Agarnu would be taken by the slaves carrying his litter, groaning under the weight of their burden, wade into the fjord and set it afloat, causing Agarnu to float far enough to the point of where he drowned to death while sobbing about how he can't swim, putting an end to his tyranny once and for all.
