Surely you have seen for yourself... The pain and suffering that fills this world! But God is merciful, and so, created the Old One. A poison to the poison. The Old One will feed upon our souls, and put an end to this tragedy.
~ King Allant

King Allant XII, also known as Old King Allant, is the main antagonist of the 2009 action role-playing game Demon's Souls and its 2020 remake of the same name.

He was the great king of Boletaria that was originally beloved by his people. However, as he grew older, he fell into depression and abandoned faith in humanity. This led to him reawakening the Old One, seeking to plunge the world with him to end his misery.

He was voiced by Peter Marinker in both the original and remake while in the Japanese version, he was voiced by Katsuhisa Hoki.

Biography[]

King Allant XII was a great and beloved ruler of Boletaria whose heroically aided his kingdom in defeating the vicious demons brought about by the Scourge. But as he got older, Allant grew melancholic and sought greater power for himself and his kingdom. He formed the Nexus and discovered long-forgotten soul arts, which further prospered his kingdom. But Allant would remain unhappy and eventually saw all life as meaningless. Digging further below into the Nexus, Allant would find the Old One, the oldest and origin point for all demonkind. Allant believed that the only way to end all suffering in the world was to end the world itself, and thus awoke the Old One into having it eat all souls of humanity.

Retreating deep within the Old One, Allant was granted ultimate powers in exchange for his humanity, deforming into a blob. With his newfound powers, Allant created the Old King Allant, a demon in the form of himself at the height of his power. Under Allant's orders, the demon brought upon demonic forces of the Old One and spread them across all of Boletaria, beginning the Second Scourge. All hope seemed lost to the demons until a hero escaped the Nexus and fought against the demon forces.

After the Slayer of Demons defeats at least one of the four Archdemons, the fog guarding the Boletarian Palace is lifted, allowing them to enter the palace. They find the fatally injured Ostrava, severely wounded by the demon impersonating his father. He gives the Mausoleum Key to the player for them to free Old King Doran and obtain the Demonbrandt to defeat the demon. After the player defeats the Allant demon, they hear the voice of the real Allant, who taunts them that even without his demon copy, the Old One will continue its onslaught and tells them to seek it out.

Upon defeating all five Archdemons, the seal of the Nexus breaks, enabling the player and the Maiden in Black to reach the bottom layer of the Nexus and encounter the Old One. Within the Old One, Allant convinces them to join him in serving the Old One, but the player refuses and strikes the king down, ending his misery. In his final breath, Allant remarks that no one wishes to go on.

Appearance[]

As a human, King Allant was an elderly man with long white hair and facial hair. He wore a royal white uniform decorated with golden shoulder pads, sleeves, and a robe around his waist. In his demon form, Allant is a deformed amphibious creature with a black blob body, with two "arms" and a flat bottom. His body is covered in warts and tentacles, and his head only consists of four olive-colored eyes with multiple pupils. A sword can be seen embedded in the right arm stump.

Equipment[]

  • Soulbrandt: The "Northern Regalia" was a two-handed enchanted sword of unrivalled power believed to have been created by God, the entity that created humanity, the Old One, and the world itself. The blade could be split into two separate one-handed swords named "Soulbrandt" and "Demonbrandt." Soulbrandt and Demonbrandt were diametrically opposed to one another and were representative of the two primary paths that humans could use souls for. Soulbrandt represented the sinful path chosen by those who coveted the souls of others for greater power. The blade could cut directly into the soul of an opponent, and strengthened in the hands of a wielder who used it for evil purposes.

Trivia[]

  • Defeating Allant's true form makes him drop the Soulbrandt, the sword used by his demon replica.
  • In the PlayStation 5 remake of Demon's Souls, Allant's quote "The Old One will feed upon our souls and put an end to our tragic realm of existence!" is replaced with "The Old One will feed upon our souls and put an end to this tragedy."
  • The False King's Demon's Soul dropped by the Old King Allant can be consumed for 60,000 souls or traded to Blacksmith Ed to combine the Soulbrandt and Demonbrandt into the Northern Regalia.
