You left me no choice! It was the only way to bring you back. I didn't want to do it, but I had to force your hand! I'm not a Viltrumite, you shouldn't have left me in charge! You're the Emperor, you should've known it was too much for me! Especially after so long!
~ The Immortal's villainous breakdown as he fails to recognize Mark.

Your family could endure... You- You need to repay the debt you owe me, whether you want it or not. That's why I set this in motion! (...) END MY TORMENT!
~ The Immortal explaining his motives to Mark.

King Immortal, also known as The King of Earth and formerly known as The Immortal, is a minor antagonist in the Image Comics series Invincible and its animated adaptation of the same name.

Once a honorable and ruthless hero, the Immortal became a deranged and broken man due to the combining factors of his stress caused by his eternal duties and responsibilities, as well as the loneliness that the very nature of his abilities implied. Knowing that no one on Earth could possibly match his strength and relieve him of his suffering, the Immortal's broken mind found it logical to call the attention of the man that appointed him into this position in the first place: Invincible.

Immortal began to use his nigh-endless resources to enforce his rule with an iron fist, turning Earth into an oppressive police state; creating senseless wars, destroying entire cities just for questioning his authority, disconnecting communications between civilizations, and even creating work camps, all in hopes of calling Emperor Invincible's attention.

He was voiced by Ross Marquand, who also voices Robot, Bi-Plane Kursk, and Omnipotus in the same series, Infinity Ultron in What If...?, Apocalypse in X-Men '97, and portrayed Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Biography[]

Background[]

Following Robot and Thragg's defeat, Invincible and his family decide to leave Earth for good in order to serve his duties as the newly-appointed Emperor of the Viltrum Empire after Omni-Man's death. Invincible turned to the Immortal for help, asking him to keep the peace Robot he established and even improve upon it, he appointed him as the King of Earth.

Invincible, recalling his previous time travel experience, decides to keep Robot's brain as a consultant and friend to the Immortal in hopes that his company keeps him from going insane like he did in the future he saw, not knowing that it was Robot's intervention that made the Immortal go insane in the first place.

The Immortal's reign began as one of the most peaceful times on Earth, with him described as a fair and just ruler, even in the far future. However, as the centuries began to roll by, the Immortal's mind began to deteriorate more and more. He realized that the grueling duty he was trusted with was one that had no ending, and that only became more clear as he saw everyone that he ever loved and trusted die - both physically and in his memory, while he remained.

Eventually, his mind fully gave in to the pain and Robot's "advice," turning him into a deranged tyrant with a resentment towards Invincible for his extremely lucky upbringing, as well as cursing him with such role. He knew that only Invincible was strong enough to put him out of his misery, so he did what he thought was best - cause as much pain and suffering as possible to call the attention of the reformed Viltrum Empire and, by extension, its Emperor.

Finally at Peace[]

Centuries later, two members of the Revolution, Fightmaster and Dropkick successfully managed to create a functioning time machine. The pair believed that the only thing that could possibly kill the Immortal was the ink used to write the Declaration of Independence, and travelled back in time in order to steal it. In the middle of their heist, they call the attention of Invincible and Rex Splode. Luckily for them, the two heroes were ambushed by Multi-Paul, who at the time believed Rex was indirectly responsible for the death of his sister. Dropkick and Fightmaster used this opportunity to escape, not before witnessing Invincible's power first-hand as he effortlessly slaughtered Paul's clones.

Once the duo realized that the legends about the Declaration of Independence weren't true, their time machine was left with enough energy for just one more trip to the past. They ultimately settled on recruiting Invincible by any means possible after seeing his display of power, directly taking him out from a date with Atom Eve.

Now in the future, Invincible and the pair of heroes let themselves be caught in order to see the King. Almost immediately after seeing him, the Immortal recognizes Invincible and begins an erratic rant about his position and how he had been waiting countless years just to see him come back. Invincible tries to explain to the Immortal that he isn't from this time, but the Immortal's unstable mind misinterprets this as Invincible trying to avoid responsibility.

The Immortal begins to break down, revealing his resentment against Invincible, explaining that he didn't know how it felt like to outlive everyone that was close to him and eventually lose all memories of them. He claims that Invincible at the very least owes him to be relieved of his eternal burden and his suffering, and that if he won't do it willingly, he would have to force him to. The Immortal then attacks Invincible, starting a fight. Invincible naturally tried to disarm the situation, but he was eventually consumed by his rage and decapitated the Immortal, freeing the people of Earth once more.

Invincible leaves the future, not before telling Dropkick and Fightmaster to keep the Immortal's body parts separated as they would eventually regenerate if they were close to each other.

Trivia[]

  • Though the ending of Issue #143 might suggest that Invincible successfully avoided the future he saw by leaving Robot to make the Immortal company, Robert Kirkman states in the PENvinciPALS of Issue #144 that the future remains the same, and that it was Robot's brain what made him go insane in the first place.
    • King Immortal mentions that only one man alive knows him as "The Immortal," heavily implying that he killed Robot at some point in time.
  • Almost every word coming out of King Immortal's mouth sets up a future arc in the series, including the Scourge Virus, the the secrets of Invincible's bloodline and his eventual takeover of the Viltrum Empire.
