King Julien XII is the main antagonist of the Netflix animated series All Hail King Julien, a prequel of the Madagascar franchise.
He is King Julien XIII's uncle and the former king of the lemurs of Madagascar. He abdicated his throne to his nephew to avoid being the victim of a grim prophecy, resulting in the events of the show, but later tries to kill his nephew to retake his throne. He is also arch-nemesis of Pancho.
He was voiced by Henry Winkler.
Personality[]
King Julien XII is a lazy, paunchy, older lemur oozing smarminess. When Julien thrives as king, his devious uncle will do any conniving thing to regain the throne. He kept the lemurs in soul-crushing silence to avoid Fossa attacks. When Masikura tells him that "the one who holds the crown will be bitten by the Fossa," he gives up his crown to Julien so that he won't be eaten According to Masikura and King Julien he never apologizes, and everyone was afraid to stand up to him anyone who does he had banished.
Biography[]
King Julien XII was a very strict and paranoid ruler who forbade any fun activities to keep from attracting the Fossa to his location. Most lemurs respect him in that he has kept them safe for many years, but the truth is he is a selfish and cowardly individual who is only interested in saving his own life and prefers to rule his kingdom through fear.
But then a fortune-telling chameleon named Masacora had a prediction that the king of the lemurs would inevitably be eaten by the Fossa. After offerings and pathetic begging to the sky gods had failed to reverse this fate, he then realizes that he can't be eaten if he isn't the one who wears the crown. So he pretends to retire from his position as ruler, passing it on to his nephew, the wild and free-spirited Prince Julien XIII, knowing that he would be eaten instead and that he can take over again once the prophecy has been fulfilled, and runs off for somewhere safe until the deed was done. But unbeknownst to him, Julien XIII had survived the attack, but not without losing a chunk of his butt to the Fossa (as the prophecy didn't say all of him would be eaten).
After a while of hiding, Julien XII returns and, much to his disappointment, sees that Julien XIII is still alive, and even worse, that he has reformed his former kingdom in favor of fun activities such as water slides (one of which he defiantly turned off while Julien XIII was riding it, making his butt sore). So he tricks his nephew into believing that the Fossa are planning an attack on the lemurs and that anyone who can stop them will gain "immortality" so that he would go off into their territory and eventually be eaten while he takes over as king again. During this, he abolishes all of Julien XIII's changes so he can rule with fear again. However, his former assistant and bodyguard, Clover, becomes wise to his treachery and forces him to help her save his nephew by acting as bait. As punishment, he is then forced into a Fossa costume while a female Fossa cuddles him much to his horror.
He also teamed up with Crimson, Clover's twin sister, to get revenge against King Julien and kill him, but failed many times to do so. However, Crimson ended their alliance after he attempted to kill Clover by having her fight her grandmother's murderer, Wigman Wildebeest, in a tournament, which Crimson also wants revenge against for killing her grandmother, so she secretly helped Clover defeat him.
After many failures in trying to rid his nephew, he finally changes his ways after he falls for Zora (formerly Koto's female henchman), who was previously married to Mort and marries her instead. He is last shown with Zora attending Clover and Sage's wedding.
Relationships[]
- Zora - King Julien XII fell in love with Zora, a Mountain Lemur, and decided to give up on taking back his throne from his nephew to pursue a happy loving life with her, thus redeeming himself in the end. Zora shares his feelings.
- King Julien XIII - King Julien XIII used to think well of his uncle and remembered him fondly when he moved, but completely lost his good perception of him once he and his kingdom got held captive in The Man in The Iron Booty. Ever since Julien was determined to stop his uncle from taking back the throne and plunging Madagascar into silence and fear once again. When Uncle King Julien tried to recapture the kingdom by having Julien put everyone in jail, he saw Mort's ex-mate, Zora, and fell in love with her. He then decided to give up his evil ways and move to Feartopia with Zora.
- Clover - During the time Clover was his bodyguard, Uncle King Julien made a series of laws that Clover found unjust, but was unable to object for he forbid her to speak, saying her paranoia gave him gas. Being his bodyguard, Clover experienced horrific things, including the deaths of many lemurs in the Footstool Program, a program first revealed in "The Panchurian Candidate". In the episode "Eye of the Clover", Uncle King Julien posed as a mysterious rattlesnake patron behind a shoji screen and ordered the crocodiles to invite Clover to the Tournament of the Doomed with hopes to get rid of her. He described her as "a thorn in his side" every time he tried to reclaim the throne. Even though the two never got along, he seemed to know Clover's interest in rules very well, clearly thinking out his plan in King Julien's Watching You, knowing that she would end up imprisoning the entire kingdom soon enough due to her excessive paranoia.
- Crimson - During their alliance which started in "Crimson and Clover", Crimson acted as Uncle King Julien’s muscle, rescuing him from prison and capturing his nephew for him, as shown in “The Man in The Iron Booty” and “King Juli-END?”. After that, Crimson joined his team in the “Jungle Games” and competed for his team. Their alliance ended in the “Eye of the Clover” when Crimson helped Clover win the Tournament of the Doomed.
- Maurice - He knows Maurice as his nephew's caretaker. Maurice was the second to find out Uncle King Julien's true colors. Uncle King Julien also enjoys teasing him as was seen in Night Creatures.
- Karl - King Julien XII and Karl only met in All Hail King Julien: Exiled and they both reluctantly teamed up with King Julien XIII to help him take down Koto, for their selfish gains. They don't interact much throughout the show, despite them both being the most recurring antagonists in the show and the biggest enemies to King Julien XIII.
- Koto - Koto and King Julien XII met in All Hail King Julien: Exiled when he shows up to Koto’s wedding and was the head of the Fossa gladiators. He shares a dislike towards Koto. Koto got in the way of his plans to reclaim the throne from his nephew, which led him to reluctantly help his nephew defeat Koto, but only for his selfish gain. However, Amy, the Crocodile Princess, arrives and busts Ted for kidnapping her, and Koto captures Uncle King Julien and Ted. But later, Uncle King Julien witnessed the War of the Beasts and heard of Koto's demise.
Trivia[]
- He is very similar to Scar from The Lion King as he is the uncle of the main protagonist and sets him up to be killed so that he can be king. However, the main difference between the two is that Julien XII redeems himself, whereas Scar is Pure Evil.
