🎶Now that I have the power, this is my finest hour! Nothing on this Earth can stop me NOW!🎶
~ King K. Rool's most famous quote in his song "Finest Hour".
KLUMP!!!
~ King K. Rool when summoning Klump.

King K. Rool, or simply K. Rool , is the main antagonist of the Donkey Kong Country Cartoon series, the adaptation of the Donkey Kong franchise.

He is the tyrannical king of the Kremlings, the self-made monarch of the Kremling Krew, and the persistent archenemy of Donkey Kong and his family of Kongs. He seeks to take the Crystal Coconut and have it to himself so he can use its power to become the ruler of Kongo Bongo Island because of being greedy, abusive, sadistic and power-hungry to his own avail. During his quest, he is often rivaling and scheming against the Kongs, plotting on stealing the Crystal Coconut, spread propaganda to his Kremlings army and is often being shamelessly evil as well as an sadistic leader.

He was voiced by Benedict Campbell in English, while in Japanese, he was voiced by Jūrōta Kosugi (who also voiced various characters like Dōgen and Pale Bayleaf).

Appearance[]

King K. Rool card

King K. Rool as seen on a trading card manufactured by Rare and Ahomaro Games

Although very similar to his game counterpart, there are some notable differences. Much like in the games, King K. Rool is a green obese Crocodile, however his sometimes large and other times short tail is entirely absent here and he also doesn't have his iconic bloodshot eye either (though he briefly gets one in the episode 2 "Ape Foo Young" after being punched by Donkey Kong). His main outfit is a large gold crown with small green balls, gold chestplate, gold wrist bands and a red cape that is much shorter than in the games.

Personality[]

K. Rool: Mwahahahah!!! WHAT will I do first? Herd the apes over a cliff? PLOW DOWN the banana fields? Mahahehehe!!!
Klump: Yes SIR! You FINALLY outsmarted those smart-aleck chimpanzees, a FINE victory indeed!
Krusha: But uh general, Donkey Kong just GAVE us the coconut...
K. Rool: WHAT?!
Klump: But that is NOT the way it's going down the history books Krusha!
K. Rool: He just, "gave it", to you?
Klump, nervous: Well uh, yeah, kinda...
K. Rool, enraged: You, MASSIVE LUNK of
WASTED BRAIN MATTER!! I knew there was something odd about this victory! Don't you see? It's a trick, a setup, a scheme! a SCAM!!! Those monkeys are up to something! But, whatever it is I'M going to outsmart them! Klump!! Return the Crystal Coconut, immediately!
Klump: But, but SIR! It's been your life-long
paddle to get the Crystal Coconut-
K. Rool: JUST DO IT!!!!
~ K. Rool to Klump and Krusha "The Legend Of The Crystal Coconut".

He takes the role of a comedic villain throughout the series; where he is a very persistent king with a British accent who seeks to steal the Crystal Coconut and conquer all of Kongo Bongo Island. He is also a cunning mastermind who relies on his troops to attack the Kongs and orders his dimwitted duo of Kremlings to steal the coconut by yelling and throwing fits.

He also acts sophisticated, posh, underhanded, calculating and refined in manner, but happens to be narcissistic, a little childish, silly, hammy, over-the-top, downright melodramatic and has quite the quick temper. Despite his incompetence and shortcomings as a villain, he'll go to greater extents of his plans and making backup plans in order to succeed at his plans that usually backfire on himself. He also deeply hates the idea of being underestimated by others, as he has a full song dedicated to how "Nobody Is Gonna Make A Monkey Outta Me"; showcasing how he can see the complexity in the Kongs' plans and sees them as inferior to himself, and he showed himself to be an overthinker who overanalyzed the moment by assuming the Kongs were trying to outsmart him with a fake coconut when the reality was that the coconut was actually handed over to him.

K. Rool: I hope those two Homespun idiots, have finally got rid of that cursed Crystal Coconut... It's already been a BAD villain day.
Donkey Kong: Banana! Slamma!!
K. Rool, sarcastically: Oh
great.
Donkey Kong: Uh, I want the Crystal Coconut back uh, please.
K. Rool: You want it
back?? You? Want? It?? BACK!?! *gasps* Oh all the ssstupid! You mean I had the Coconut and I! I cannot believe oh! Is there no justice!?
~ K. Rool realizing his mistake of thinking he recieved a fake coconut, ruining his own victory, and a perfect example of K. Rool being too clever for his own good in "The Legend Of The Crystal Coconut".

His plans are often very complex and devious, sometimes foolish by occasion, but K. Rool manages to find the brilliance and usefulness to manipulate any opportunity in order to make his plans of conquest work, even in predicaments he spots for the Kongs or some of his plans that can be considered potentially dumb and useless to begin with. He nearly succeeds at his plans but often gets carried away and often lets his ego get the better of him.

Despite this, he can be quite intimidating when he has power and resources utilized and putting his mind into it. Such as the episode "Curse of the Crystal Coconut", where he had threatened to sink Kongo Bongo into the ocean by reading the cursed letter twice unless Cranky lets him have the Crystal Coconut and does, causing the island to sink before Donkey Kong stops him, which is unique enough to stand out from the traitorous Polly Roger.

Klump: But the military! Serving you, King K. Rool, it’s my LIFE! Where will I go?!
K. Rool: That is no concern of mine! From this day forward, you are no longer…a lizard! You. Do not. Exist! And I forbid the name of Klump to be EVER! SPOKEN! AGAIN!! YOU ARE EXILED FOREVER!!!
~ K. Rool raging and then firing General Klump for the latter's incompetence in “Klump’s Lumps.
Donkey Kong, Diddy uhm, it was good match, you won and I lost, good sportsmanship and all that (chuckles) I'm just an underprivileged reptile. It's been under my jeans with uh (screams)

~ K. Rool being defeated once again.
Surrender Cranky! Hand over the coconut you sssspineless ssimian!

This is our strategy: We are here, and the Crystal Coconut is there. Here, there, here, there... Get it?
~ K. Rool to Klump.

He didn’t invite me? That’s so unfair! What’s wrong with me? Haven’t I always tried to be a good enemy to Donkey Kong?
~ King K. Rool when he discovers Donkey Kong didn’t invite him to his wedding in “Four Weddings and a Coconut”.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, K. Rool's name is pronounced two different ways during the first episode. First, he was referred to as "King Kay-Rool" and then "King Kuh-Rool" shortly afterwards. However, after that episode, the former pronunciation was never used again.
    • According to Rare Ltd. (Developer of many Donkey Kong video games and creators of King K. Rool), "King Kay-Rool" is the correct pronunciation. This was reaffirmed in the English versions of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Donkey Kong Bananza.
  • Surprisingly, in the episode "Baby Kong Blues", King K. Rool has a soft spot for children and babies, particularly Baby Kong. He calls him "Prince Junior Croc" much to Baby Kong's accepting delight, laughs at Baby Kong wreaking havoc in his lair, frightening Klump and Krusha and reads to him bedtime stories of K. Rool's memoirs. He even sings the lullaby to Baby Kong while he sleeps called "My Wittle Evil One".
  • His voice actor, Benedict Campbell, returned to voice him in the 2023 fanmade sequel short "DKC: Return to Krocodile Isle" by Alex Henderson.
