King Neptune XIV is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside SpongeBuck SquarePants) of the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise.
He is the supreme ruler of all of the ocean, who has a penchant for being a wrathful and narcissistic tyrant. His name is often used in place of God's, with phrases such as "Dear Neptune", "Neptune preserve her!", and "Oh my Neptune!". But he has never explicitly been shown to be worshiped by the creatures of the sea. He is also the archrival of the Flying Dutchman and the father of Triton and Mindy.

Personality
Neptune is an arrogant monarch who is prone to wrathful behavior and enjoys bullying mortals. In "The Clash of Triton", he was shown to be an abusive father towards his son, Triton, as he had him locked in a cage just for being more interested in mortal stuff than being a cruel tyrant who spites mortals. in The SpongeBob SquarePants movie, he was depicted as being even more cruel and outright homicidal, as he tried to kill Mr. Krabs (who Plankton framed for stealing his crown) and threatened to kill SpongeBob when he refused to let him execute his boss. It was even mentioned by Neptune's daughter, Mindy that her father can barely go one day without executing people. Neptune was also willing to have one of his own servants imprisoned for 20 years just because he touched his crown despite the fact that it's his job to polish his crown.
Despite this, however, he isn't completely irredeemable, as in "Neptune's Spatula", he concedes that SpongeBob is the winner of the cooking competition after realizing that the Krabby Patty he made is superior to the ones Neptune made, showing that he can be honorable. In the movie, he praised SpongeBob for his heroism, apologized to Mr. Krabs for trying to kill him and accusing him of stealing his crown and even took his daughter Mindy's advice to become a nicer ruler. In addition, Neptune cares about his daughter and he even happily forgave SpongeBob instead of getting angry at him for making a mess. Additionally, he seems to care for his wife Queen Amphitrite and while he initially imprisoned his son he did later grow to appreciate him after he used his powers for destructive purposes.
Biography
SpongeBob SquarePants
King Neptune appears for the first time in the episode "Neptune's Spatula", where after SpongeBob pulls a spatula, he comes, asking who pull it. Everyone says it's SpongeBob, however Neptune didn't believe it due to him believing SpongeBob is a lowly creature. He then tortured Patrick multiple times, before challenging SpongeBob into a cook off where if SpongeBob wins, he gets to be his fry cook in Atlantis, however if he loses, he must stop fry cooking forever.
Neptune takes him to the Poseidome, where the first person to cook 1000 patties wins. Neptune cooks easily with his god-like power, while SpongeBob finishes his first Patty. Neptune gave the crowd a krabby patty, which they hated it. Neptune tastes SpongeBob's Patty, which he loves and declares SpongeBob SpongeBob as the winner. However after learning that he can't bring his friends to Atlantis, SpongeBob states that he doesn't want to go. Neptune decides to turn SpongeBob into a god anyways. After Neptune realizes that there may be a problem, SpongeBob gets the idea to make King Neptune his trainee.
In "Party Pooper Pants", he is seen in live action as a guest of Patchy the Pirate at his party.
Neptune serves as a major antagonist in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The movie also introduces Neptune's daughter, Princess Mindy. In the movie, Neptune is bald (thinning), has brighter green-skin, has a larger nose, and a different beard. He is also explicitly portrayed as a king rather than a god and lives in some sort of sand castle just outside of Bikini Bottom somewhere in Atlantis. Neptune is very cruel, brutish, and tyrannical, which he tells his daughter is necessary for him to be respected ruler. Neptune is shown to be a ruthless and unfair deity who rules over the sea with an iron fist and making his citizens suffer constant harsh punishments (including sending his servant 20 years in the dungeon for touching his crown, even though it's his job to polish the crown). His crown is very important to him, not only because it's a symbol of his power, but because it covers his "thinning" (bald) head.
When the crown is stolen by Plankton, Neptune attempts to execute Mr. Krabs, who is framed for the crime with the only evidence being a fake note saying he did it and a phone call by Plankton saying he took it to Shell City. When SpongeBob refuses to let him kill his boss, he threatens to fry him along with his boss until Mindy arrived and convinced her father to let him go to Shell City and get his crown back, leading Neptune to angrily order SpongeBob to return with the crown in 6 days (which was originally 10 until Patrick argued it down to 6) and freezes Mr. Krabs, as he will keep him that way to make sure he doesn't try to run away until the day of the execution. He spends the rest of the movie dealing with his bald spot (as shown through Mindy's magical clam) while Bikini Bottom has been taken over by Plankton and Neptune doesn't even care. He then realizes the error of his ways at the end of the movie when he nearly kills Krabs after he magically locks his daughter out of the restaurant for stalling him, before SpongeBob and Patrick arrived with his crown before he does so.
Happily reunited with his crown, Plankton puts his giant mind control device on his head to make him kill SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs and their friends by himself, but SpongeBob uses some music magic by singing "I'm a Goofy Goober, Rock" to destroy all Plankton’s mind controlling buckets, freeing Neptune and all the citizens, thus having Plankton finally defeated attempting to get away but gets stepped on by a in coming crowd. Instead of killing Plankton, now that he knows that he's the one who stole his crown, he lets the police arrest him instead, knowing he almost become a monster just like him. Neptune praises SpongeBob for his heroic deed, he finally takes Mindy's advice of being a loving and compassionate ruler, knowing now its the reason how Bikini Bottom was saved and apologizes to Mr. Krabs for foolishly accusing him and freezing him.
King Neptune is shown in "Krusty Towers" as a picture where Squidward refers him as "Neptune XIV."
Neptune appears in "SpongeBob vs. The Patty Gadget", where he was sleeping until being awoken by the explosion of the Patty Gadget.
In "SpongeHenge," when an anchovy tells Incidental 45 that Neptune must be mad, she denies his existence, stating that "Everyone knows Poseidon is the ruler of the undersea."
In "The Clash of Triton", he goes to the krusty krab for his 5000th birthday, and he's sad because he misses his son, Triton. A long time ago, Neptune imprisons him because he's more interested in mortal stuff. To cheer him up, SpongeBob and Patrick frees Triton and then he imprisoned Neptune as revenge before causing chaos in Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob frees him and after seeing what Triton have done, Neptune is proud because he uses his powers correctly.
In "High Sea Diving", he returns, executing Old Man Jenkins for impersonating him.
In "Trident Trouble", SpongeBob accidently got Neptune's trident and Neptune got SpongeBob's spatula. Neptune realizes the mix-up and is defeated by a monster. Neptune comes to SpongeBob and tells hjm the error to SpongeBob before getting the trident back. After Neptune fixes damage to the town, they team up to defeat the monster and her child with a monster patty.
In "SpongeBob and Patrick's Timeline Twist-Up", Bunny replaces SpongeBob and got hired as Neptune's servant. Neptune stayed in bed and told Bunny to help the citizens. Trivia
- King Neptune was originally gonna be the main villain of the movie The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, where he would kidnap Gary and clone him, which is similar to Sue Nahmee from Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. However, he ended up getting cut and the role of main antagonist was instead given to King Poseidon. He also would've been in his live-action form if he hadn't been cut.
