King Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lionheart, is a minor antagonist in the 2010 film Robin Hood.

Biography[]

Richard had spent a number of years fighting in the Crusades in the Holy Land, at one point having his forces gather up a large number of Muslim men, women, and children and putting them to death.

As the film commenced Richard was in France besieging Chalus Castle. Included in his forces were young English soldiers Robin Longstride, Allan A'Dayle, and Will Scarlett. When Richard invited his men to give an honest assessment of their situation, Robin took him up on his invitation.

After giving a frank but unflattering assessment of the situation and the King's conduct the King went promptly had Robin and his companions put in the stocks.

The King died a short time later in an attack on Chalus Castle. Robin and his companions were able to free themselves. Disguised as English knights they travelled back to England, where Robin in the guise of Sir Robert Loxley informed Richard's brother John and his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine that Richard was deceased. John was named King upon learning of Richard's death.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • This version of King Richard was played by Danny Huston, who also played Marlow Roderick in 30 Days of Night, William Stryker in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Victor Maynott in A Monster in Paris, The Axeman in American Horror Story: Coven, Erich Ludendorff in Wonder Woman, Wade Jennings in Angel Has Fallen and Vincent Roeg in The Crow.
  • In the 2010 film Robin Hood Richard is much more historically accurate than presented in earlier presentations of the Robin Hood story. Instead of being portrayed as a heroic character, this Richard is portrayed as a bloodthirsty tyrant who values wealth and power over the lives and rights of his subjects.
