King Sarengo is a major antagonist in Triss, the fifteenth book in the Redwall novel series. He is the tyrannical and cruel ruler of the island Riftgard, who had been enslaving tons of creatures to harsh labor on it, while also sailing to places for either loot or more slaves. He is the father of King Agarnu and grandfather of Princess Kurda and Prince Bladd.

Biography[]

As the ruler of the island of Riftgard which consists of fjords, mountains, forests, and beaches with a large army of Ratguards presiding over it, King Sarengo would rule over it with tyranny, having countless creatures be captured in raids that involve other creatures being slain, one such raid being on Roc Arrem, a skilled swordsbeast squirrel and father of the protagonist Triss, and his group of squirrels that wound up being captured after he got killed and taken to the island to his fortress to be enslaved into doing harsh labor involving them being overworked and toiling away through labor consisting of laying wood, straightening ground, and keeping logs tight and even while being whipped heavily by the Ratguards. Throughout it, they would be starved heavily to the extent of being badly fed and poorly clad. Some creatures were even conveyed to have died from the labor, like the parents of a very young squirrel named Sleeve who would grow up to a life of slavery at the fortress.

Whoever tried to escape or did so much as stop in their slavery would be imprisoned in the punishment cage half submerged in the cold shallows of the fjord, which were fed by icy water from the mountains, where they would either die from exposure or be executed by the captain of the Ratguards, Riftun. Sarengo himself was conveyed to have executed some slaves with sadistic delight using his own sword at them for sword practice, much to his son Agarnu's distaste, even referencing this when Kurda displays similar behavior. Only when darkness fell were the workers allowed to halt in their chores with whips cracking as they were led off to the slave quarters beneath Riftgard where they would be fed on a single bowl of grain porridge, some vegetable roots, and a pail of water between every groups of ten before going back to labor the next day. Sarengo was infamous enough to the point where nobody disobeyed him.

He had taken a liking to the golden fur of a golden hamster slave named Mokug, whom he made his personal slave as a result of this while the other slaves would be treated cruelly by his son, Agarnu, as a particularly bad one. One day, after having slew a corsair vermin to get a map to Redwall Abbey, Sarengo goes on a plundering voyage aboard his big ship, the Seafang, to Mossflower with the intent of raiding the abbey to get its treasure. He took Agarnu along after he initially wept not wanting to go only to be forced to by Sarengo, wanting to toughen him up, saying he'd either come back there as a king or not at all and took Mokug and lots of Ratguards along with them. However, the abbey wasn't marked on their map, but written there it said that it was up a river that ran onto the western shores, somewhere in Mossflower.

There was another place marked on the map said to be full of badgers' treasure, an underground fortress called Brockhall that laid forgotten many long seasons and was used by Badger Lords to hide their treasures away from vermin. Seeing as it was marked clear on the map, Sarengo decided to go for Brockhall first and made it in spite of how hard and rough the going was. However, when they arrived there, they discovered a full-grown female adder named Berrussca and three young ones. Having scouted the place out for days and days, Sarengo discovered it had two entrances, a front and back one. When they attacked and invaded the place, Sarengo went in the front way and sent Agarnu and some Ratguards in the back, though he had arrived late as he had been caught by Berrussca who met him head on, knocking the iron mace and chain from his paws and engaging him in a struggle to the death.

While her three children would get their tails wrapped about by the discarded mace and chain and attack the Ratguards, Agarnu cowardly leaves his father behind to die, running straight by his father and out the front way. Mokug himself would be standing in the open doorway with the map given to him by Sarengo who told him to stay put outside and guard it with his life. Sarengo would continue fighting the adder like a mad beast. Weaponless and trapped in her giant coils, he sunk his teeth into the adder's spine, just below the skull. He hung on, hoping for rescue by his son and the Ratguards, but it never came. While Berrusca died from her spine being broken by Sarengo's clenched teeth, Sarengo died of the wounds he got from the viper's poison fangs, receiving his comeuppance for his tyranny.
