King Yama, later known as the Eggplant King, is one of the overarching antagonists of Spelunky series.
He was a Hindu Deity of death and Lord of Naraka (hell). He was subsequently adopted by Buddhist, Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, and Japanese mythology as the king of hell, and the husband of his Late wife. his 2 henchmen Oxface & HorseHead were protecting Yama to destroy the spelunkers from killing Yama. He was turned into the Eggplant King by Guy Spelunky's wife Tina Flan. He is Tina Flan's arch-nemesis.
In Spelunky 2, He looked different in his eggplant form. His face was whipped by the player, but has allowed them to wear the Eggplant Crown any way.
This article also shows the version of King Yama (Aka The Eggplant King) from the indie video game Spelunky series.
Spelunky HD[]
He serves as a final boss in 5-4, destroying tina flan with his bare fists. He slams his own fists, making the skulls fall down to the floor so tina would get knocked down. He also uses his own fists to punch anyone that gets near him. After taking enough damage or having both his fists destroyed, his face will detach from his skull and begin floating around the arena, engulfed in flame, crashing upwards into ceiling to prompt skulls to fall, and spitting fireballs that turn into Magma Men downwards. If the player moves within two tiles of his head, he will bounce upwards before moving back down to his original position. When King Yama is defeated, the final exit door in the game will open. Once entered, the player will view the end cutscene, where they meet Yang in the flesh and escape with him and the Golden Trophy. Yang will be unlocked, and the player will also receive an extra 100,000 gold to add to their total score in their run from securing the Golden Trophy. If the Spelunker brings the Eggplant to him and throws it at his head, King Yama will turn into an Eggplant Monster that will be completly immovable and constantly sweat. This will also set Yama's health to 2 points. As the Eggplant throw deals 1 damage, this effectively makes him have only a single point of health. Though this strategy makes King Yama much easier to defeat, the challenge of bringing an Eggplant to him does not make it a very viable one. Due to a quirk in the programming where thrown Eggplants set his health to 2 points, it is impossible to kill Yama by throwing Eggplants at him, as they will constantly reset his health back to 2.
Spelunky 2[]
Eggplant King is an NPC in Spelunky 2.
The Eggplant King has 1 HP and cannot damage the player. He sits unmoving on his throne, speaking to the player if approached. The armrests on his throne, as well as his knees and shoulder pads can be stood on.
Damaging the Eggplant King's head will kill him, exploding into 10 pieces of "Giant Food" (), which heal the player for 10 HP when touched. He also drops the Eggplant Crown.
The Eggplant King is also immune to fire damage, although this serves more of a purpose in lore rather than in gameplay.
Trivia[]
- The Eggplant King is a humbled King Yama from Spelunky HD, being referred to in the game's code as "Yama".
- This is reflected in his immunity to fire damage, having previously been the ruler of Hell.
- Tina Flan's journal entry states he was defeated by her after she threw an Eggplant at him. This references the Eggplant secret in Spelunky HD, a secret first achieved in a solo run legitimately by Bananasaurus Rex, who was playing as Tina Flan (named "Hardhat" in HD) during the run.
- According to the Journal entry of the Eggplant Minister, Yama hasn't given a single order to his followers since he was defeated.
- The Eggplant King's original form also makes some brief cameos in Volcana and Arena. Magma pots held by Imps contain the former King's face on them, and his face can also be found alongside his former guardians Horse Head and Ox Face in the deathmatch screen between matches.
