King Zøg Grunkwitz is a major character in Matt Groening's fantasy comedy show Disenchantment.
He is the monarch of Dreamland and the father of Princess Bean as well as the former husband of Queen Dagmar and Oona.
He was voiced by John DiMaggio who also voices Bender Bending Rodriguez in Futurama.
Biography[]
In the beginning of Season 1, Zøg tries to get Bean married, first to Prince Guysbert and then to Prince Merkimer, in order to forge an alliance. However, after Guysbert impaling himself on the throne and Merkimer being transformed into a pig, Zøg decided to call the wedding off realizing Bean was right.
For the remainder of the season he orders numerous unethical experiments on Bean's friend Elfo as elf blood is the key ingredient for the elixir of life. After obtaining the needed Eternity Pendant, Zøg found out that Elfo was not an actual elf. This angered him and he decided to lock up Bean and throw Elfo out of Dreamland. To obtain real elf blood he then had Bean released and his men followed Bean and Elfo to Elfwood where they brutally attack the elves but are ultimately defeated. However in the battle Elfo gets mortally wounded, causing Bean to despise Zøg.
Zøg then comforts Bean, expresses his remorse over Elfo's death and explains that he wanted the elixir to revive his wife and Bean's mother Dagmar who had been poisoned by a poison that turns people into stone 15 years ago. Bean who coincidentally had a little bit of elf blood then managed to revive Dagmar. Zøg at first was overjoyed to have her back but she preferred to hang out with her daughter and her return caused conflict with his current wife Oona. A mysterious figure then started to petrify several people in the castle and Oona was the prime suspect. While searching for Oona Bean's friend the demon Luci informed Zøg that he had been betrayed and revealed that Dagmar herself had attempted to kill Zøg all those years ago. Realizing that Dagmar had never cared about him he confronted her on the tower but Dagmar just coldly kicked him down the stairs before kidnapping Bean and petrifying most of Dreamland with Zøg as one of the few survivors.
In Season 2, he and Bean manage to reverse the petrifying potion with the help of the elves who then begin to live in Dreamland. During the course of the season Zøg becomes a better man and gets closer with Bean. Unfortunately, at the end of Season 2, Bean accidentally shoots Zøg and badly wounds him. While Zøg is in his bed struggling with his injuries, his right-hand man Odval manipulates Zøg's son Derek and becomes the de-facto ruler of Dreamland. This culminates in Odval having Bean Elfo and Lucy burned at stake, although Bean had previously managed to save Zøg's life and Dagmar saved her.
In Season 3, Zøg hatches a plan to escape Odval by faking his death and leaving the castle inside a coffin with his loyal knight Pendergast carrying him out. When Zøg's coffin leaves the castle he sees Pendergast's head on a pole and realizes that he's now at the mercy of Odval's right hand the Arch-Druidess who buries Zøg alive. While Zøg survives his experience of nearly suffocating takes a bad toll on his sanity and he spends the rest of the season growing more and more mentally unstable before at the end he himself now unable to speak without a ventriloquist communicates to Bean that she is now the ruler and accepts being brought into a mental institute by Chazz hoping that one day he will be able to return.
