~ Kino Manami, Haunted Wood Mansion |
Kino Manami is the main antagonist of the Junji Ito short story Haunted Wood Mansion, also known as Wooden Spirit.
Personality[]
Kino Manami appears to have the paraphilia objectophilia, the sexual attraction to inanimate objects. In this case, her attraction is towards the mansion Megumi and her father inhabit. While she appeared to form a relationship with Megumi's father, to the point that she ended up marrying him, all of this was a ruse to allow her to get closer to the house and eventually 'consummate' her relationship with it, indicating that she has a penchant for persuasion and deception.
History[]
A student of architecture, Kino Manami made her presence known when she visited the beautiful wooden mansion that belonged to Megumi and her father, which had recently been designated as a national treasure of Japan. Remarking on the magnificent architecture, Manami immediately made her weird behaviour visible when she described the house as 'masculine', and that she was 'shivering from excitement' from simply touching the walls, beams and flooring.
Manami then requested that she live at the mansion for a while, which Megumi expressed suspicion towards, though her father accepted the request. Megumi argued with her father over this decision, pointing out that Manami was behaving strangely towards them and the mansion, though her father reasoned that it wasn't a problem, as Manami had promised that she would help maintain the property.
Over the next few months, Manami ingratiated herself with Megumi's father, having helped look after the mansion, and the two eventually married. When Megumi asked Manami if she had any ideas about where to go for the honeymoon, she replied that 'staying home is the best!'. That night, Megumi found her father staring intently at one of the mansion's rooms, wondering to himself if the place truly was perfect. Megumi tried to reassure her father, but he insisted that something seemed off about the property. Megumi then went upstairs, but found a bizarre sight before her; Manami was naked, rubbing herself against the floor and walls, clearly deriving gratification from the disturbing act.
This behaviour continued into the early hours of the night, but then a strange smell appeared in the air, similar to bad breath, and the mansion began to shake. Megumi ran downstairs to find her father furiously scrubbing at the floor, attempting to remove a pattern of eyes from the wood... but then the eyes began to move! The entire house was coming alive around them, as eyes formed all over the beams and walls. Megumi then looked up to find the naked Manami hugging one of the ceiling beams, her body transforming into wood and laughing maniacally. After passing out and having a brief dream about her childhood in the mansion, Megumi came to her senses and led her father to safety as the house finished transforming into a mass of living tissue.
Realizing what had happened, Megumi's father determined that Manami had a lust towards buildings and that the mansion 'had returned her feelings', resulting in the two fusing together. As a result of Manami's actions, the mansion was no longer worth anything, and had been stripped of its status as a national treasure.
Powers and Abilities[]
Kino Manami's most prominent ability is being able to forcibly merge with inanimate objects. She did this to merge with the wooden mansion as part of her plan to 'consummate' her love towards it. As a result of this process, the mansion turned from a building into a living organism, developing eyes all over its internal surfaces and becoming warped and deformed. The mansion's thatched roof also appeared to grow, as if it were hair. During this process, Manami also transformed, first taking on the appearance of a wooden statue, then seemingly disappearing as she merged with the mansion.
