The Kirishiki Family are the main antagonists of the Shiki franchise.
They are a clan of vampire nobles, posing as ordinary aristocrats to hide their true nature. While giving off the appearance of a typical family structure from the outside, none of them are actually related by blood. The supposed patriarch Seishirou is secretly subservient to his daughter Sunako, who is actually over a hundred years old, and the true leader of their clan.
History[]
Seishirou Kirishiki married Chizuru, fully aware of her nature as a vampire. Due to the nature of his family as murderers of other humans, he viewed the vampires as no different from his own flesh and blood. Unfortunately for him, when his parents were bitten, they did not rise again, forcing him to remain human. This provided benefits for the rest of the clan, as he could pose as a perfectly normal man, while his wife and "daughter" remained in their manor during the day.
Eventually they would move to Sotoba, after Sunako learned about it from the novels of Seishin Muroi in Seishirou's library. The Kirishiki's would introduce themselves to the community in a warm and open fashion, while secretly gaining access to the homes of several villagers. After feeding on and killing numerous people in Sotoba, the ones who became vampires would be inducted into the clan as their agents with open arms, as long as they obeyed their orders and helped them with their plans.
Tatsumi led most of the family's operations, having more power than either the patriarch or matriarch, due to his cunning mind and special abilities as a Jinrou. While he was ruthless, he would also obey Sunako's orders, even if he disagreed with them. Sunako advised him to spare Toshio Ozaki, as her dear friend Seishin Muroi cared for him, and she empathized with the doctor despite the fact that he was their enemy.
Eventually after witnessing Ozaki murder his own wife, Seishin fully defected and joined the Kirishiki clan. Despite being on their side, he still cared for Ozaki, and was relieved to hear he was alive after war broke out between the humans and the Shiki in Sotoba. Sunako however regretted sparing Ozaki and openly told Seishin this after he murdered Chizuru.
While the Kirishiki tried their best to hold onto Sotoba, the villagers overwhelmed them, eventually managing to break into their manor and tear in apart. However, they overlooked a hidden basement that allowed Sunako to hide from them, then escape when the coast was clear. Despite being relentlessly hunted, Sunako ultimately survived in the end thanks to the intervention of both Tatsumi and Seishin. By the war's conclusion, she was the last surviving member of the Kirishiki family.
