~ Kiros' most famous catchphrase and refrain in his song.
“
Not anymore. While you ruled this pride, I've built my army. Yours is the last pride in the Valley of Kings. Which means everything the light touches belongs to me. There will be one ruler... One... Lion... King.
„
~ Kiros' most famous quote as he and his clan surround the Pride clan before singing "Bye Bye".
He is a rogue and formidable white lion and the vengeful ruler of a pride of white lions known as the Outsiders, who seeks to conquer every lion pride and kingdom in the Valley of Kings. Following the death of his son, Shaju, Kiros would take his vengeance by eradicating Obasi and Eshe's pride and forcing their adoptive son and biological son, Mufasa and Taka on the run. His threat leads the brothers to embark on an adventure to find Milele, a journey which strains the relationship between the two, resulting in Kiros becoming the primary cause of Taka's metamorphosis into Scar.
Kiros is a large, muscular, middle-aged white lion with a shaggy white mane, white elbow tufts and blue eyes. He and his pride had pale fur because of a genetic mutation.
Personality[]
“
From this moment on, everything the light touches belongs to me.
„
~ Kiros highlighting his belief of strength and superiority over other animals.
Kiros is a malicious, sinister, remorseless, bloodthirsty, sadistic, depraved, vain, narcissistic, heartless, psychopathic, black-hearted, aggressive and ruthless predator with little to no tolerance of failure, as shown when he orders his pride to kill one of his followers for failing him while showing no remorse. He is very cruel and enjoys frightening his victims before killing them, as shown with his toying of Obasi and his pride before sadistically murdering them all out of spite.
Devoted and passionate to his belief of showing strength and superiority over all animals, he was bent on killing Mufasa for killing his son (even though it was done on self-defense) and was willing to cross miles of territory to track Mufasa down.
In spite of his lack of redeeming qualities and ruthlessness, he was shown to have deeply cared about his son Shaju, as evident when Shaju was accidentally murdered, he was furious by the death of his son, and would claim to anyone he saw that Shaju’s death was their fault and that Milele should’ve been his to rule, hinting that even behind his formidable attitude he still had some form of care for his son. Though Kiros was already evil because he had already plotted to kill Obasi’s pride and take over Milele, the difference being his original intention with doing so was so Shaju could take over the said land after him.

Taka: I may hold the blood of a king, but it was Mufasa who killed his son. It was Mufasa who trapped you up here, outsmarted you at every turn. Now, I will lead to him... and to Milele. Kiros: Milele! Milele is nothing but a dream, a vision sold to cub. Taka: Ah. Well, tell that to the monkey. He heads them to it. Outsiders: (growls) Taka: Look at you. Trivia[]
Kiros' name is of African origin and means "lord".
Kiros is the third The Lion King villain created to flesh out Scar's backstory and his fall into villainy. The first two were the Strange Lion and the Strange Cobra from The Lion Guard, who ambushed and scarred Scar in his youth, leading him to turn evil after Mufasa didn't appreciate his face-off with them. Although, that version of Scar was already evil as he already planned to overthrow Mufasa.
Interestingly, Mads Mikkelsen previously starred as Kaecilius in Doctor Strange alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo. Ejiofor would later be cast as Scar in The Lion King remake and Mikkelsen would later be cast as Kiros in the remake's sequel/prequel.
Ironically, Mads' brother Lars voiced Kiros in a different dub of the film.
Kiros is a dark parallel of the following characters:
Mufasa: Both share a connection through the conflict they represent, with both being leaders of their respective prides (Mufasa being the leader of the Pridelanders, Kiros being the leader of the Outsiders). Mufasa believes in the "Circle of Life," unity, and a balance among all animals in the kingdom, eventually becoming a just king who unites the animals of Milele (the future Pride Lands). Kiros, on the other hand, dismisses the Circle of Life as a lie and operates on a "might makes right" philosophy, believing in the superiority of his pride and seeking to conquer every other pride to establish his sole rule. He is even driven by vengeance after Mufasa kills his son, Shaju (in self-defense), leading him to commit genocide against other prides, including Mufasa and Taka's adoptive parents. Mufasa's actions, while leading to a death, are defensive, while Kiros's actions are pre-meditated and genocidal. While Mufasa is a caring and determined leader who inspires loyalty through respect, Kiros is a ruthless, sadistic leader who rules by fear and has little tolerance for failure, even ordering the killing of a follower for failing him. Ultimately, Kiros serves as an example of what Mufasa would've become if he cared about his own bloodline and power rather than the "Circle of Life" philosophy and the welfare of all animals in the Pride Lands, thus Simba wouldn't have been born if he hadn't met and fallen in love with Sarabi.
Scar/Taka: Both instigate a major betrayal of Mufasa and a group of lions and are also the catalyst for the other's descent into villainy, with Kiros manipulating Taka and causing the injury that becomes his namesake scar. Both characters eventually become the primary villains in a major conflict with a lion king and his royal lineage. Both are also driven by resentment and a desire for power they feel is rightfully theirs (Kiros seeks to conquer the Valley of Kings because his pride was ostracized, while Scar later seeks to rule the Pride Lands after feeling overlooked for the throne). Ultimately, Kiros serves as an example of what Taka would've become if he fully embraced his darker thoughts and tendencies as Scar, though he is still no better because in the long run after being corrupted to turn against Mufasa and then becoming estranged, he murders Mufasa for the throne and let the hyenas into the Pride Lands to overhunt, thus leading to his demise after Simba comes back to take his place as king.
Obasi: Both are pride leaders and fathers who seek to protect their lineage, but their methods and philosophies are diametrically opposed, ultimately defining their characters and influencing Taka's (Scar's) path. While Obasi is initially a reclusive and protective leader who is loath to accept outsiders into his pride but eventually allows Mufasa to stay and even comes to appreciate him for saving his mate Eshe, Kiros is an overtly ambitious and genocidal ruler of the white lions (the Outsiders) who believes in the superiority of his pride and seeks to conquer all other lion prides in the Valley of Kings, actively killing any who oppose him. Although Obasi, while flawed, genuinely cares for his family and attempts to preserve his bloodline by sending Taka and Mufasa away from Kiros's attack, even at the cost of his own life, Kiros, despite a hint of care for his deceased son Shaju (whose death he seeks to avenge), is a ruthless tyrant who sacrifices his own followers without hesitation and shows no real care for his other relatives. Kiros serves as an example of what Obasi would've become if he fully embraced his initial hostility towards outsiders and his paranoid nature, or if he had been as consumed by vengeance and a lust for power as Kiros was.
Kiros shares some similarities with Zira, the main antagonist of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride.
They both lead a pride of lions known as “the Outsiders”, appropriately named for their alienation from other lion prides.
They both seek to avenge the death of royalty of whom they were close to (for Zira, she sought to avenge the death of King Scar, whilst Kiros sought to avenge the death of his son, the Crown Prince of the Outsiders).
Both reprimand a member of the Outsiders for killing one of their own through the reactions of a lion pride leader (for Zira when she slaps Kovu for killing Nuka, which triggered Simba's anger by banishing Kovu, for Kiros when he orders his lionesses (including his two sisters) to devour Azibo for letting Shaju die, which triggered Obasi's compliment by making an acknowledgment towards Mufasa).
Both of them have two relatives as their underlings (for Zira it was her eldest son and only daughter, Nuka and Vitani respectively, for Kiros it was his sisters, Akua and Amara).
Both scratched a lion's left eye (for Zira who scratches Kovu's left eye for killing Nuka, for Kiros who scratches Taka's (who later becomes Scar) left eye to save Mufasa's life).
Both lead their prides of lions during the final battle (for Zira, she leads her pride of Outsiders to defeat the Pridelanders until they are intervened by Kiara and Kovu, for Kiros, he leads his pride of Outsiders to conquer Milele (which later becomes Prideland) until Mufasa, Taka (who later becomes Scar), Sarabi, Zazu and Rafiki are helped by the animals living in Milele (including the lionesses)).
Both attempt to kill a heroic lion to avenge the death of a family member until their relatives intervene (for Zira who attempts to kill Simba to avenge Scar's death until Kiara intervened which led to Zira's death, for Kiros who attempts to kill Mufasa to avenge Shaju's death until Taka (who later becomes Scar) intervened by scratches his left eye to save his adopted brother).
Both of them are defeated and killed in water.
Given his goal is basically to kill all lions outside his pride (unless they surrender like Taka), Kiros is arguably the most vilest of the other Lion King villains since he essentially committed genocide against his own species.
Despite his motives of revenge for his son, the white lioness who serves as Kiros's wife and queen of the Outsiders was never mentioned.
Unlike all the other characters in The Lion King, Kiros never appeared in the animated films as he is an original character created for the franchise.
