Kitty Patton is the overarching antagonist of season one of The White Lotus.
She is the overbearing and protective mother of Shane Patton, whom she accompanies on his honeymoon to his recent wife, Rachel.
She was portrayed by Molly Shannon, who also portrayed Millie Frock in Bob's Burgers, Jackie Frost in Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Movie, Christie White in American Dad!, and Eva in Hannibal.
Physical appearance[]
Kitty is vain and tries to maintain her appearance, having had plastic surgery in the past. She dyes her hair brown and is often seen wearing sunglasses and smart clothing
Personality[]
Kitty's personality is stereotypically that of the narcissistic mother. She demonstrates uncapped vanity, and has a particular protective side toward her son, as he is the only one who validates her. The pair have an odd relationship, where Shane tries to find a wife who embodies his mother's subordinate nature in marriage. She advocates for women to take on a submissive role to their husbands, and believes that there is no shame in being a trophy wife which she projects on to Rachel. She approves of Rachel only due to her belief that she will fulfil the subordinate role a wife should take with Shane.

Background[]
Kitty is the mother of Shane Patton. She was present for the string of his previous relationships before marrying Rachel. Kitty took on a housewife role in her marriage, and mollycoddled Shane. It is suggested that due to her narcissism, she spoiled and isolated Shane to be the object of his validation. She was extremely involved in the planning of Shane and Rachel's wedding, and at some point intended to accompany them on their honeymoon.
The White Lotus[]
Kitty joins her son and his new wife on their honeymoon, which is welcomed by Shane but begrudged by Rachel. Throughout the trip, Kitty only speaks about herself or enabling Shane. She also shows a superior attitude and complains about the hotel. Rachel becomes increasingly uncomfortable with Shane's relationship with his mother, finding them too close, and seeing that Shane wants someone to be a replica of his subservient mother.
In a moment alone, Kitty tells Rachel of her approval of their marriage, but explains this is only for superficial reasons such as her beauty and readiness to take on a subordinate role in Shane's life. Rachel reveals that her intent in life is to make something for herself. Kitty disapproves of this, leading Rachel to realise she is falling in to a trap where she will be expected to become Kitty, and exist only for Shane's appeasement. Kitty then leaves Hawaii, leaving Rachel in a disillusioned and regretful state over her marriage to Shane.
