Blood is life! Blood is life!!!
~ Knock

Herr Knock is the secondary antagonist of the 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.

He is an estate agent, Thomas Hutter's boss, and Count Orlok's minion after being brainwashed by the latter. He is based on R.M. Renfield from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, of which the film is an unofficial adaptation.

He was portrayed by the late Alexander Granach.

Biography[]

Knock is an agent of an estate dealing with buying and selling houses in the fictional city of Wisborg, which Hutter works at. Before the event of the movie, he allied himself with the aristocrat Count Orlok from the Carpathian Mountains, who is in truth a vampire, and was subsequently brainwashed by the latter and became Orlok's new minion. Knock then orders Hutter to travel to the Carpathian Mountains to finish the process with Orlok. In reality, Knock wants his master to come and bring forth plagues to Wisborg.

Some time later, Knock outs himself as insane and is subsequently admitted into an asylum, where he eats spiders to consume their blood. After Orlok successfully travels to Wisborg and brings forth plagues to the city, resulting in countless deaths, Knock glees. When the guard isn't paying attention, he attacks him and escapes, before going rampant and attacking others for no reason. In response, the townspeople chase Knock and throw stones at him, which doesn't bother him at all as he escapes their sight.

However, at some point Knock is recaptured. Through telepathy, he then realizes that Orlok is in Hutter's house, drinking the latter's wife Ellen's blood while the sun is rising. Fearing for his master's life, Knock tries to warn him to no avail. He then climbs to his cell's window to warn his master better, but the guards come in just in time and see it happening. They take him down and tie him up, leaving Knock unable to help Orlok. After Orlok dies, Knock mutters that his master is dead before lowering his head, dying.

Trivia[]

  • Knock always speaks in broken speeches. The fact that Hutter finds it normal implies that it's his natural speaking pattern, not a result of Orlok's brainwashing.
  • In the 1979 remake of Nosferatu, some of the characters reverted to their original Stoker names, including Renfield.
