“ | I know these apes. They follow Koba. They tried to kill me. They fear what I will do to them. So now, they serve you. Just to survive. | „ |
~ Caesar when being asked about Red. |
Koba's Loyalists are the secondary antagonists of the 2017 novel War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations and the 2017 film War for the Planet of the Apes. They were a troop of turncoat apes that rebelled against Caesar and his Ape Colony in the name of the renegade ape Koba.
History[]
War for the Planet of the Apes: Revelations[]
After the death of Koba, the Human-Ape war began, with the U.S. Military sending in Colonel McCullough and his battalion to exterminate Caesar and his apes.
During the beginning of the war, apes that followed Koba in his uprising became disillusioned with Caesar's way of leading. Soon, gorilla guardian Red convinced Koba’s old friend Grey to form an uprising comprised of apes loyal to Koba. They recruited multiple chimps, and three other members of the Gorilla Guard to their cause.
After the building next to their hideout in the city was destroyed, Caesar sent all ape females and children to the woods while they continued fighting in the city. The Gorilla Guard was sent to protect them, while the Loyalists slipped away from the others, and followed them into the woods. The Apes soon found a temporary hideout in the woods and settled there.
That night, the Loyalists disarmed and incapacitated all members of the Gorilla Guard. Ajax and Ursus attempted to stop them, but Ursus was killed, and Ajax was injured, though he escaped. They then rounded up all the apes at gunpoint and lied to them that Caesar and the rest of the ape army were dead, and they now had to follow Grey.
Though Grey was the official leader of the Loyalists, Red was the true brains behind the movement, and essentially used Grey as his puppet.
Caesar's wife Cornelia later escaped with her son Cornelius, as well as other females and children. Red sent Olo and Sampson to capture them, and Flint and Shell to capture Ajax. He also sent Fox, Stripes, and Aghoo to kill Caesar's son Blue Eyes while he was on his journey to find a new home for the colony with Rocket.
They then relocated to a new hideout up north of the woods. On the way to the hideout, Grey's wife Cedar was named the new Ape Queen. Olo and Sampson are unable to locate Cornelia, and Red decides to send Oak to find her. Flint and Shell track Ajax to the old abandoned Ape village, and fight him, though they are both killed by Ajax, who dies of his wounds shortly after. Cornelia and her group were also present at the village and witnessed their deaths. Oak then decided to switch sides, feeling ashamed of what the Loyalists had been doing.
Oak then accompanied Cornelia, and an ape named Maple to the Ape hideout up north. Upon arrival, Winter held them at gunpoint, as he bought the lies Red and Grey taught them. Oak intimates him into letting them pass, and they enter. They soon engage in a conflict when an ape named Rain goes into labor, and Cornelia assists her. Red tried to interfere, but Oak and other females prevented him from doing so. Grey had a change of heart and ordered for the Gorilla Guard to be released. Red then killed Grey, and tried to kill Oak, but his gun was jammed. He was then chased out by Cedar and the other females. Cornelia retook the title of Ape Queen, and the Loyalists coup was finished.
Meanwhile, Fox, Stripe, and Aghoo failed in killing Blue Eyes. Both Stripe and Aghoo were killed, and Fox was captured and tortured by members of the military. He later sacrificed himself to save Caesar and the Ape Army from a fleet of battleships. Stone, the lieutenant of Koba, on the other hand, returns to Caesar’s colony and retained his membership as a soldier of the ape army.
Red and more than a dozen of his remaining followers fled the city out of fear of Caesar. They soon joined McCullough's battalion Alpha-Omega, and were made” Donkeys”, glorified servants for the soldiers, and joined the fighting against Caesar.
War for the Planet of the Apes[]
By 2028, Red and two other donkeys were part of a platoon led by Captain Rod Wilson, who were tasked with finding Caesar's command base in Muir Woods. They stumbled on a trench occupied by multiple chimp scouts. They engaged, killing many of them, until backup arrived and killed many of the human soldiers with a wave of arrows. The two other chimps were killed, and red was apprehended with four human soldiers. Red would later escape after convincing Winter to betray Caesar and give up their hideout's location.
Winter later joined up with the group after Colonel McCullough killed Caesar's wife and eldest son and was branded as one of their donkeys. However, he would later be accidentally killed when Caesar interrogated him for the Colonel's location.
Red and all the other donkeys were called back to their base at the border, where they were preparing for an incoming battle with the Northern Military. After the soldiers captured the entire ape colony, they were forced into working on a wall for the battle. The Donkeys were tasked with whipping any apes that failed or showed resistance. Caesar would later be captured outside of the base by Red and was also put to work with the rest of the colony.
A few days later, the northern military finally arrived, and they engaged in battle. During the battle, Red had a change of heart and sacrificed himself to save Caesar from the soldiers. Caesar then threw a grenade that destroyed the wall, killing the soldiers, and all of the remaining donkeys.
