Koji Shindo is a minor antagonist of Yakuza and its remake Yakuza Kiwami, and later, a major antagonist of Yakuza 2 and its remake Yakuza Kiwami 2.
He was the loyal captain of the Nishkiyama Family of the Tojo Clan, before becoming his second patriarch, after his boss' death. Enraged by his boss' demise, he plotted to kill his supposed killer, Kazuma Kiryu and to take over as the new chairman of the Tojo Clan.
He was voiced by Peter Lurie in the original Yakuza who also voiced Hiroshi Hayashi in the same game, the late Tomoyuki Dan in Yakuza 2, Taichi Setogawa in Yakuza Kiwami and Takahiro Kageyama in Yakuza Kiwami 2. In the English dub of the original game, he was voiced by Peter Lurie, who also voiced Hiroshi Hayashi in the same game, Vulcan Raven in Metal Gear Solid, Paxton Fettel in F.E.A.R., Kidomaru in Naruto, Green Goblin in the 2005 Ultimate Spider-Man video game, Nosferatu Zodd in Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage, and Viceroy Calares in Code Geass.
Biography[]
Shindo is first introduced as a boss fight in the first game of Yakuza, at the Bar Serena, after having received the order to take down Kazuma Kiryu, by his boss, Akira Nishikiyama, stating that it was nothing personal, and he was just following orders.
After his boss suicide, Shindo became the Second patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family and developed a grudge against Kiryu and the Tojo Clan, for supposedly causing the death of his boss, and refused to help Kiryu against the Omi Alliance and the Jingweon Mafia, who aimed to destroy the Tojo Clan. Later, it was revealed to be an accomplice of Toranosuke Sengoku, an Omi patriarch, and helped him to murder several Tojo Patriarchs.
Kiryu confronts him again at the Tojo Clan HQ, after having took hostage the second patriarch of the Kazama Family, Osamu Kashiwagi, the acting chairman and wife of the deceased Sohei Dojima, Yayoi Dojima, and her son Daigo. He reveals his ambitions to take control of the Tojo Clan and his infatuation with Yayoi, expressing his desire to be his husband, even forcing her to kiss him.
Enraged by his betrayal and his inappropiate behavior, Kiryu fights him again. After having chased him down to the garden, Kiryu defeats him by injuring him with a sword given by Yayoi. However, after Kiryu returns at the Tojo HQ, Shindo reappers, only to be defeated again. When Yayoi expels him from the Tojo Clan, he tries to kill Kiryu with a gun, only to be shot in the head by Daigo.
Personality[]
Shindo is an arrogant and perverted gangster, believing to have the right to lead the Tojo Clan. However, despite his confidence, he cowardly runs off from Kiryu after being damaged enough in his boss fight.
He is strongly loyal to his patriarch, to the point he even disobeys order from the chairman Yayoi Dojima, after he wrongly believes they caused Nishiki's death.
Powers and Abilities[]
Shindo is a generally proficient sword wielder, and he always fights using a katana in all his boss fights across the Like a Dragon franchise.
In the first Yakuza, he has an original Kenjutsu-based moveset with a basic rush combo and a basic attack, a Rear Horizontal Slash. This moveset gets reused by Futoshi Shimano for his second fight in the same game.
In Yakuza 2, his moveset gets largely expanded upon for his fight at Tojo Clan HQ. Shindo is now able to assume three alternating Kenjutsu stances: Low, Middle and High.
- His Low stance has a two-string Rush Combo, composed of a Windup Rear Kiriage and a Windup Lead Diagonal Slash. He is also able to use a guard reversal in this stance.
- His Middle stance reuses the original rush combo from his Yakuza 1 moveset.
- His High stance has a new rush combo and a downward diagonal left slash.
In the 2015 remake of Yakuza, Yakuza Kiwami, Shindo reuses the Kenjutsu moveset of Okada Izo from the original Like a Dragon: Ishin! (who was portrayed by Akira Nishikiyama, fittingly enough). His rejuvenation phase correlates with Kiryu's Essence of Extreme Rush Heat Action.
In the 2017 remake of Yakuza 2, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Shindo instead reuses Ito Kashitaro's Kendo sword moveset from the original Like a Dragon: Ishin! (who was originally portrayed by Goh Hamazaki from Yakuza 3). Shindo's version of Kashitaro's moveset also gets reused for several sword-wielding minibosses in the Dragon Engine games of the franchise, similarly with Katsura Kogoro (portrayed by Akiyama in Ishin!).
