Biography[]
Kong Tien is a malevolent and ancient demonic entity of the Chinese mythology who resides in Hell. By the 20th century, she was worshipped by the Black Dragon Triad, the most powerful criminal syndicate of China secretly led by Marshall Kai Ti Chang, who aspired to find the Heart of the Dragon in the Emperor's Tomb so he could conquer China. Such was the devotion to Kong Tien that an underground temple dedicated to her was erected beneath the Black Dragon Fortress in the Peng Lai Island. The Triad would also go to feed Kong Tien with the souls of the traitors within their ranks to appease her while wishing to see her returning to the realm of the living. All those Triad members sacrificed to Kong Tien would apparently later roam the temple's catacombs in a zombie-like state.
In 1935, Kai decides to sacrifice the soul of Mei Ying, an undercover Chinese agent sent to stop him from locating the Emperor's Tomb, to Kong Tien one night before going to look for the Heart of the Dragon with the Mirror of Dreams, which he hopes to make whole through Kong Tien's magic. Kai holds the ritual with his loyal acolytes and prepares to surrender Mei's soul to Kong Tien, but fortunately for Mei, the American archaeologist Indiana Jones, whom Kai had originally hired to find the Mirror's fragments to double-cross Albrecht Von Beck and who had teamed up with Mei upon learning of Kai's true plans, comes to her rescue and prevents the ritual from being fully completed, triggering the temple's collpase and forcing Kai and his few acolytes to run away.
Unfortunately, Kong Tien still gets enough time to make the Mirror whole and possess Mei, leading her to mutate Mei into a winged and clawed monster, taking Indy upwards the temple, kissing him with lust and then throwing him aside before summoning bringing the dragon statues at her side to life and opening a gateway to Hell below them. She then uses her powers to bring skeletical spirits on fire to attack Indy while taunting him that Mei was lost forever and that he would join her as his servant in Hell. Howeve,r Indy makes use of the Pa Cheng, a mystical Chinese weapon, to fend off her spirit henchmen and defeat her, banishing her back to Hell and freeing Mei from her influence, allowing her and Indy to escape from the island so they can proceed with their quest to save China from Chang and his cultists.
Despite her defeat, however, Kong Tien's actions did have an effect on Mei Ying, as she felt traumatized to some degree for the experience of being possessed, lamenting that she should have married the banker her father wished to engage her to upon her and Indy being retrieved by Wu Han in his ship, but ultimately gets over it and joins Indy in stopping Kai. As for Kong Tien, she was presumably defeated for good and may now stay in Hell for all eternity, with her temple's destruction and Mei's plans to disband the Black Dragon Triad likely preventing Kong Tien from being summoned back or worshipped ever again.
Trivia[]
- Kong Ties shares some similarities with Nur-Ab-Sal from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis: however, whereas Nur-Ab-Sal has strong ties to his game's MacGuffin and plays a pivotal role in the climax, Kong Tien doesn't have any ties with her game's MacGuffin and is treated as more of an obstacle Indiana Jones and Mei Ying have to face to stop Kai Ti Chang's plans.
