Your presence does not surprise me, Assassin. I have known of you ever since your craft entered the Eastern Fringes. Why did I not have you killed? Because your mission and the act you are about to commit proves the truth of all I have ever said or done. I merely punished those who had wronged, just as your false Emperor now seeks to punish me. Death is nothing compared to vindication.
~ Konrad Curze's alleged last words.

Lord Konrad Curze, also known as Night Haunter, the Dark King, and the Last Judge, is a major antagonist in the grimdark science fantasy franchise Warhammer 40,000.

Master of the Night Lords Legion and one of the twenty Primarchs created by the Emperor of Mankind to lead the Space Marine armies of the Imperium of Man, Curze was snatched away by the four Chaos Gods as a baby and flung across the galaxy. The Primarch landed on the isolate planet Nostramo, a world devoid of sunlight where crime ran rampant. Upon reaching adulthood, Curze subjugated Nostramo's criminal element and became known to the local people as "Night Haunter."

Konrad Curze suffered from the gift of foresight. Throughout his entire life, Curze experienced uncontrollable visions of the future that threatened to degrade his sanity. Eventually the Emperor, who had launched a Great Crusade across the galaxy to unite the territories of mankind and search for his missing Primarch sons in the process, arrived on Nostramo with four of Konrad's Primarch brothers in tow. Although Curze instantly saw dark visions of his own future and apparent death, he nevertheless pledged his allegiance to the Emperor.

Curze was given command of the Night Lords, a Space Marine Legion created using Konrad's genetic template. With his Space Marine sons by his side, Night Haunter waged war against the enemies of the Emperor during the Great Crusade. Unlike most Primarchs, Curze held no affection for his Space Marines and didn't enjoy his role as a commander. He forced his own harsh ideals of order and justice upon the worlds he conquered and became so feared for his brutality that enemy forces often surrendered rather than face him.

Eventually Warmaster Horus, the Emperor's second-in-command and a Primarch who had been corrupted by the Chaos Gods, began plotting a large rebellion against the Imperium of Man. Curze and the Night Lords chose to join the Warmaster's plot as they had long felt dissatisfied with the "weak" rule of the Emperor. Overtime a full half of the Space Marine Legions and their respective Primarchs rallied under Horus and a galaxy-wide civil war later known as the Horus Heresy erupted between the forces of Chaos and the loyalists.

As the Horus Heresy waged across the galaxy, Konrad Curze and his sons raided Imperial worlds and sowed terror upon the citizens of the Imperium. They came face-to-face with their loyalist brothers on multiple occasions, particularly those originating from the Dark Angels Space Marine Legion. Ultimately however, the traitors were defeated at the Imperium's capital world Terra where the Emperor slew his son Horus in single combat. The Emperor sent numerous assassins after Curze, one of which was seemingly successful in eliminating Night Haunter. However, no evidence was ever provided of Curze's death, and rumors persist that he survived the encounter.

  • Konrad Curze was the only Primarch to have been slain, allegedly at least, by an ordinary human.
