The Koopas are major antagonists in the Super Mario franchise. They are henchmen of Bowser, frequent enemies to Mario and Luigi, though some have been allies to Mario.
Koopa Troopas are large, humanoid turtles. They usually have yellow skin, blue eyes, a shell, and shoes. The colors of the shell often vary among the species, but the two most common are red and green. Some Koopas also have wings they use to fly. Those koopas are called Paratroopas.
Personality[]
As enemies, Koopas are often aggressive and will always attempt to defeat the Mario Bros. When patrolling, they display different behaviors depending on their shell colors. For example, Koopas with green shells will walk off of cliffs just like Goombas, while Koopas with red shells will turn around when they encounter an edge. However, in Super Mario spinoff games, (Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc), you can play as a Koopa Troopa in protagonist settings, and help Mario defeat various villains.
History[]
Mario Bros.[]
An early version of the Koopas named "Shellcreepers" appear as enemies in the arcade game Mario Bros. Much like their final version in Super Mario Bros., the Shellcreepers walk on all fours and have green, red or purple shells. Unlike them, however, the Shellcreepers cannot be defeated by being jumped on, and have to be hit from under the platform in order to make them retract in their shells.
Super Mario Bros.[]
Koopa Troopas commonly appear in the Super Mario Bros. series as enemies. When Mario stomps on them, they hide in their shells and can be used to take out other various enemies.
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
Alongside returning alongside their usual variants in Super Mario Bros. 3, the game also saw the debut of one of the Koopas' most recurring variants: the undead Dry Bones.
