Biography[]
While driving home after refusing to take a case (which was to find an iguana) in the mountains, Kogoro, Conan and Ran encountered a older man, who had car trouble and agreed to help drive him to his villa (which the man promising to pay for the service as it turns out that he's Kosaku Hotta, the billionaire industrialist).
Upon returning home, he encountered the Villa caretaker, Masahiro Yamauchi who informs him that his children have come for his birthday, knowing that if he dies, they will get their inheritance and even invited the Mouris and Conan to stay. During the celebration, Kosaku was given a wine for his birthday from his older son Koichi, however the 2nd born son, Ryoji stopped his father and told Koichi to drink it first, claiming that Koichi poisoned the wine in order to get the money. However, this made Kosaku angry, which resulted in the food being wasted on the group. Just then a woman showed up who is revealed to be Fumiko, the first daughter and second child of the Hotta family. However, Kosaku was furious that she showed up after he cut ties with her from the family five years ago, which she claimed that he sent her an invitation, but he said he never sent one and told her to leave.
While in his private room, Kosaku notice a box of whiskey on the table and decided to open it, only for a large explosion to happened, which resulted in Kosaku to die in the explosion. Because of this, Kogoro deduced that one of his children was the one who killed him, at one point it was believed to be Fumiko, who admits that while she didn't kill her father, she is actually grateful for that person. However, it was also assumed that Ryoji, who wasn't in the villa was the killer and because the phoneline were cut, there was no way to get the police and what worse was that all of the car's tires were slashed, which led to believed that Ryoji was the culprit.
However, Conan refuse and decide to do his own investigating. After talking to Fumiko involving a man she knew in her past and finding something in Masahiro's room, Conan discovered who killed Kosakua. The next day as Kogoro and the others were about to have breakfast, Conan used his watch to knock out Kogoro) deduced that the killer was none other than Masahiro Yamauchi, who denied the claim as he had no reason for killing his boss, until Conan (Kogoro) revealed how added an unstable components of garden fertilizer, which contained sulfur, and friction matches and a striking pad, so that when the wine container lid was slid open, the matches would rub again the pad and ignite, causing the mixture to explode and to kill Kosaku, who was only one of two victims that Masahiro wanted to kill, Which the other one is revealed to be Fumiko, who was driving in Masahiro's car to get help. After being founded out, Masahiro openly admit that he did it and explained why he killed Kosakua (which also revealed Kosakua as the villain of the episode.)
Turns out that Masahiro had a son name Kentaro, who was a Pianist who dated this girl and wanted nothing more to propose to her but because he had little money, he could do it. However, after winning a piano competition and earning enough money to buy a ring and propose. Unfortunately, the Girl's father objected to the engagement and that father was none other than Kosaku, meaning the girl that Kentaro dated and wanted to marry was Fumiko. As Kentaro pleaded with Kosaku to give him permission to marry Fumiko, he refuses and even threaten to kill Kentaro if he came back and to show he means business, he crushed Kentaro's right hand, destroying his talent in the piano.
With his hand destroyed and losing the woman he loves, Kentaro took his own life by driving into a nearby cliff. This also led Fumiko to leave hotta family's house. When Masahiro heard what happened to his son, he decides to get a job as a caretaker for the Hotta and plan his revenge to kill both Kosaku and Fumiko. However, he had to postpone his revenge upon learning that Fumiko was banished from the Hotta family, which took him two years to find and bring her back to exact his revenge. Conan then realize that the reason why he chose Kosaku's birthday was to not only to stage his revenge on Kosaku and Fumiko but also give the police a list of suspects since they would believe the children would be the killers.
Masahiro then revealed his plan to kill Fumiko, which involved her dying the same way his son did, by rigged the car when she hit the brake pedal for more than three seconds. However, upon learning that Fumiko loved her son and never dumped him (instead being banished after what he did to Kentaro) as she still had his photo in her necklace. realizing what he done, Masahiro began to fell remorse of killing the one person who loved his son the most. However, in a twist of luck, it was revealed that Fumiko never left the entrance to the villa as she founded a note (which Conan left without Masahiro knowing in the car) and while she did admit that she hated her father to the point that she wished she killed him, she added that she can't forgive Kentaro for killing himself and having his father to misjudge her and tried to kill her, having him fall down on his knee and cry.
In an Epilogue, it was revealed that Ryoji was not only in the basement the entire time but actually was tied up as it seems that Masahiro did it in order to have Ryoji be the culprit for the crimes.
