~ Shishido to Kiryu before their final battle. |
Kosei Shishido is the main antagonist of the 2023 action-adventure game Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, a spin-off entry of the Like a Dragon series.
He was the lieutenant of the Omi Alliance's Watase Family, and after learning that the Omi Alliance and Tojo Clan were planning a dissolvement of their respective groups, secretly plotted and attempted to take control of both clans to prolong the life of the yakuza in Japan, and to also sustain his own lifestyle of crime.
He is voiced by and modeled after Yasukaze Motomiya in Japanese, who also portrayed Isaka in Kamen Rider Blade. He was voiced by Matt Bushel in English.
Personality[]
Shishido can be described as a "true" yakuza; years of being relentlessly tortured by Homare Nishitani III and forced to fight in underground coliseums has shaped him up to be an incredibly savage and resilient fighter. He will stop at nothing to make sure that he can accomplish his goals and is willing to go against those who oppose his ideals, even standing up to his own boss Masaru Watase and Yuki Tsuruno. He will use every single piece of power he can garner in his fights, such as utilizing baseball bats, sledgehammers and katanas and gaining the ability to resist otherwise immensely deadly or fatal attacks through sheer will. He also likes to use his fame and wealth to intimidate those he considers lesser than him.
Despite all of the traits listed above, Shishido still has a fair amount of honor and respect within him, mostly for people who are a higher rank than him, though he mostly shows more of this respect towards the yakuza lifestyle in general. As he has spent almost all of his life being a yakuza, most of those years are when he was a torture victim and a slave for the Kijin Clan, he feels a strong passion towards his life of crime and treats it as his only way to become successful in life. His drive for being a legendary yakuza is what usually drives him during his day-to-day life and most commonly during his battles.
Biography[]
Past[]
Shishido was originally born under a different, unknown name to his parents that were living in poverty. When he was 15 years old, Shishido was sold off to slavery so his father could pay his debts. The Kijin Clan had gotten a hold of him, and enlisted him to fight in death battles against other people that were his age. He was eventually able to get the interest of Homare Nishitani III, who ruthlessly and violently tortured Shishido for several years. It is heavily implied that Nishitani had sexually, mentally and physically abused Shishido for those years. While desperately trying to fight his way through his torture, Shishido was determined to be a free man who would live a life with wealth, fame and overall enjoyment.
Yuki Tsuruno had found himself interested by Shishido's skills in the coliseum. After being rescued from Nishitani's tortue, Shishido went on to idolize his saviour, Tsuruno, which eventually reached a point as to where Shishido joined the Watase Family. Watase personally gave Shishido the name he would use for the remainder of his life, which is supposed to represent him leaving his traumatic past behind and being "reborn". Later on, when Watase was imprisoned, Shishido would learn of the former's plan to ultimately disband the Omi Alliance. Despite agreeing to helping out Tsuruno and Watase carry out this plan, he would secretly conspire against his co-workers whilst they begun their search for the supposedly deceased Kazuma Kiryu.
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name[]
Shishido had ordered a group of men to kidnap a Daidoji Faction agent, Kihei Hanawa, due to their suspicion that he was working with Kiryu. Kiryu is able to fight the men off, but that act leads to Shishido learning that Kiryu had been seen during their attempted kidnapping. This information would find its way to Tsuruno, who ordered another attack on Kiryu. After crashing into a car that was being driven by Hanawa, with both Kiryu and Tsuruno in tow, Shishido engages in a battle with Kiryu who was going under the name "Joryu". After seeing Kiryu using a more methodical fighting style, Shishido beckons him to use his signature Dragon of Dojima fighting style. Despite losing in this battle, Shishido and Tsuruno are able to confirm their suspicions and are also able to kidnap Hanawa.
Kiryu later meets Shishido at The Castle, while searching for Hanawa. Shishido informs Kiryu about The Castle and the man who runs it, Nishitani. After Kiryu proves his worth to the Omi by battling his way through deadly coliseum matches, Shishido meets Kiryu again and tries to convince him to ditch Daidoji and once again rejoin the yakuza lifestyle. Kiryu doesn't bother giving Shishido an answer to this, which leads Shishido to simply tell Kiryu the location of Hanawa as a reward for his performance in the coliseum.
A few days later, Tsuruno is able to convince Kiryu to help the Watase Family after a series of negotiations and events. In a plan to draw out Nishitani, so there won't be anyone opposing the Tojo and Omi disbandment, Kiryu, Tsuruno, Shishido and 4 other Watase Family members go out in the city of Sotenbori and spend 30 million yen by doing various activities such as karaoke, pool and golf. However, all of their frivolous spending did not attract Nishitani, leading Kiryu, Shishido and Tsuruno to aid a hostile takeover of The Castle. After this, Nishitani cracks and asks Kiryu to meet him at an undisclosed location to settle their war. The Watase Family find Nishitani's hideout and begin to raid it, with Kiryu and Shishido battling their way to the top floor where Nishitani resided. After Kiryu defeats Nishitani in battle, Shishido kills Nishitani behind his back, as the Watase Family had planned for him to be murdered from the very beginning. In reality, Shishido had faked Nishitani's death and ordered a few Watase Family members, now on his side, to carry out his body to safety in order to recruit him.
Shishido later joins Kiryu, Watase and Tsuruno at an undisclosed construction site to discuss and plan the disbandment after Watase was recently released from jail. Shishido begins recording Watase speaking about his plans, and films an undisguised Kiryu on camera. Shishido then explains that the entire Watase Family opposes the decision of a disbandment, and that they had all joined his side to begin a rebellion. The entire Watase Family, Shishido and a slightly injured Nishitani begin to fight the trio, which ultimately ends up in Shishido's defeat. After trying to attack Kiryu, Shishido is punched into a hole in the construction site.
Shortly after, the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance disbandment had become official. When Kiryu was battling his way through yakuza that opposed the decision, he met a paint-covered Shishido at the entrance of the Omi Alliance HQ. After Kiryu battles through more Watase Family members, who were called in by Shishido, he meets the latter at the chairman's room of the Omi Alliance HQ. Shishido states his beliefs about the yakuza life and his desire to rise to the top, in which Kiryu tells Shishido that the Yakuza are done for. Shishido tries to battle and kill Kiryu, to fully finish his Omi Alliance takeover plan and to save his own lifestyle, though he is defeated. On the floor and defeated, Shishido tries to stand up and attack Kiryu once more, but he is knocked out and then kidnapped by a Daidoji Faction agent, presumably to become an agent alongside Nishitani.
Trivia[]
- Shishido's final fight shares similarities to Masato Aizawa's final fight. Their respective boss battles take place during a major yakuza clan's headquarters, Aizawa being in the Tojo Clan HQ and Shishido being in the Omi Alliance HQ, in which they battle through the top floor, to the bottom floor and eventually outside where the battle would shortly end.
- Shishido has an unused dynamic intro and QTE for his final battle, making him the only final boss in the Like a Dragon series to have an unused boss intro. For the intro, it can be viewed here.
- Shishido is ultimately the final Yakuza that faces Kazuma Kiryu in his full might, before Kiryu would eventually have cancer in Infinite Wealth, which would weaken his full strength drastically.
- Shishido is also the only final boss that Kiryu fought that does not take place in night, instead it takes place during the sunset.
