Kozo Fuyutsuki is a major character in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, serving as the secondary antagonist of the Rebuild continuity.
He is the right-hand of Gendo Ikari. Formally a professor, he is the Deputy Commander of NERV, taking over when Gendo needs to leave for business.
in the TV version, he was voiced by Guil Lunde, in The End of Evangelion, he was voiced by Michael Ross, on the Netflix version, he was voiced by J.P. Karliak who also voiced Wile E. Coyote in Looney Tunes series and Elseworlds Joker in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Appearance[]
Fuyutsuki is an elderly man, 59 of age. He wears a tan uniform at NERV, emphasizing his position as second-in-command. Fuyutsuki has grey hair and brown eyes. When seen in the flashbacks, he is dressed in normal clothes, like the time he goes on a hike with Yui Ikari.
Personality[]
Fuyutsuki is an affable elderly man, often seen talking with Gendo. While the Deputy Commander of NERV, he doesn't hold any grudges against any people, but it was hinted that he didn't want to like Gendo Rokubungi in the beginning. During a conversation with Yui Ikari, he states that he's an interesting man, but he does not think he'll like him. Fuyutsuki is also knowing of SEELE's plans involving the Human Instrumentality Project and he is on board with it. He shares the same reason as Gendo, as he wants to reunite with his former student, Yui Ikari. It is shown also that Fuyutsuki feels a sense of loyalty to the world, in a way. When he confronts Gendo at Gehirn in a flashback, claiming that he knows that Gendo knows everything about the Second Impact and stuff alike, he threatens to tell the whole world of SEELE's existence. It is highly speculated that Fuyutsuki secretly loved Yui, but it's never explicitly said so.

Kozo Fuyutsuki is a teacher at Kyoto University where he grows close to one of his students, Yui Ikari. It is said that he was already smitten with Yui beforehand but Fuyutsuki keeps this fact to himself. One day, Gendo Rokubungi is taken into Fuyutsuki's custody and Fuyutsuki picks up Gendo from a police station, where Gendo is seen bruised, claiming that the others started the first fight, which Fuyutsuki is not amused. Some time later, he talks to Yui Ikari while on a hike about Gendo and he states that Gendo is an interesting man, but he could never like him. In this moment, Yui reveals that Gendo is her boyfriend and he is a bit surprised, but doesn't show it. The next time he meets Gendo is during the Second Impact, after the aftermath, he is on a large ship where he sees Gendo. The 2 talk for a bit until Gendo invites Fuyutsuki to his and Yui's wedding. They see a young Misato Katsuragi shaken up after what happened, Fuyutsuki claiming that the poor girl hasn't said a word in 2 whole years. Some time later, after he finds out that the experiment Gendo tried failed, leaving Yui in Unit 01, Fuyutsuki goes to Gehirn where he threatens to expose Gendo to the whole world for his knowledge of SEELE and the truth behind the Second Impact. Gendo shows Fuyutsuki around Gehirn, which eventually changes his mindset, but not with likeness.
Years later, he is the Deputy Commander of the renamed Gehirn, NERV. When Shinji Ikari arrives to Tokyo-3, Gendo tells Fuyutsuki to watch over things while he's gone as he goes to meet his son after a long time. Back in the office, Fuyutsuki and Gendo talk together. After this point, Fuyutsuki is always mostly next to Gendo when business is happening, but he appears when Shinji and Asuka fail to defeat the angel and he is embarrassed, calling this a humiliation of NERV of their loss. After some time, he gets kidnapped and taken into custody by SEELE, but is saved by Ryoji Kaji. When Kaji saves him, Fuyutsuki asks Kaji if he's sure he wants to do this, knowing that SEELE is unforgiving, but Kaji saves him and gets Fuyutsuki out alive, as Keel Lorenz sends a hitman to kill Kaji, but Kaji already told Misato everything.
After this, Gendo talks with SEELE where SEELE are desperate. SEELE wants to use Unit 01 as a way of completing the Human Instrumentality Project, given that the Spear of Longinus is lost in the orbit, but Gendo refuses, since Yui's soul is in Unit 01. Keel claims that they deserve death and ends the call. The next day, NERV is revoked of it's special title and made a rogue organization. SEELE sends the JSSDF to destroy NERV and kill all personnel, which Fuyutsuki and the others are concerned and are fending for their lives. But in the middle of it, Gendo stands up and tells Fuyutsuki to watch over things, and Fuyutsuki knows what Gendo's plan is: to start the Third Impact on his own by using Rei Ayanami. Gendo's plan fails since Rei tells him that she's not his doll and she combines with Lilith and the Third Impact starts happening as Fuyutsuki turns into LCL, his final moments pondering if Gendo has reunited with Yui as well.
Trivia[]
- "Fuyutsuki" literally means "Winter Moon," and was the name of an Akitsuki-class destroyer from World War II. The Destroyer Fuyutsuki rescued the survivors of the great battleship Yamato after it was destroyed by American aircraft.
- Fuyutsuki's rank has been alternatively translated as "Vice Commander," "Deputy Commander," or "Sub-Commander." The original Japanese word is fuku (as in fukushirei), and all of these alternate translations mean pretty much the same thing. Evapedia consistently uses "Vice Commander" for convenience.
- He was originally meant to be younger than Gendo Ikari.
