So, I think the sea monster wants the throne, but it's too smart to go on land, or maybe it can't. And the ape is too smart to go into the ocean, so that's why it's baiting the ape, throwing whales at him, just, like, being a jerk.
~ Charlie theorizing about the Kraken's motivation.

The Kraken is the main antagonist in the 2023 Netflix animated television series Skull Island, a sequel to Kong: Skull Island and the first television series of the MonsterVerse franchise.

It is a chimeric, malevolent, sadistic, aquatic cephalopod-like Titan that prowls Skull Island's surrounding waters, killing anyone or anything who comes near it and later seeks to kill and usurp the island's ruler Kong.

Biography[]

Skull Island[]

Not much is known about the Kraken, though it was a cephalopod-like Titan residing in the waters surrounding Skull Island. One day, after a violent battle with three vicious chameleon-like creatures, Kong arrives at Skull Island's waters to clean his wounds, but a drop of his blood makes its way down to the ocean floor, awakening the Kraken. The next day, the creature attacked a community of shipwrecked humans, who had formed a settlement by the coast, and massacred the entire village. Kong, who had grown close to the small community and had befriended a young girl that lived there, arrived and witnessed the aquatic Titan menacingly flail about with its massive tentacles as if issuing Kong with a challenge.

Kong managed to recover the girl and instead of fighting the Kraken, he retreats to his temple lair. The girl eventually succumbs to her injuries during the night due to venomous wounds sustained during the Kraken's attack and was buried at the top of a mountain by Kong. After finishing the burial, a devastated Kong, grieving over his dead friend, tearfully roared out to the ocean, where the Kraken still resided and was watching him from afar.

Years later, the Kraken launched an attack on two more vessels that are sailing close by to Skull Island. After destroying the larger vessel, which contained a small army of mercenaries hired by a botanist named Ilene, the Kraken ambushed and submerged the second nearby vessel, which contained three teenagers named Charlie, Mike, and Annie, their parents and the ship's crew, leading to Mike's father Hiro getting killed in the process. Not long after, the shipwrecked mercenaries later attempted to call in a helicopter to evacuate them, only for the chopper to be grabbed and destroyed by the Kraken as it approached the island, killing the pilots in the process. As the two shipwrecked groups resume venturing across the island, both witness the Kraken catapult a fully-grown blue whale across the island and into the courtyard of Kong's temple as a threat display, enraging the Titan.

Eventually, the two groups came together and devise a plan. Realizing that they are unable to leave the island as long as the Kraken patrolled its coastal waters, Charlie suggests using Kong as bait by stealing an amulet that he kept in his temple and luring him out into the ocean so he can fight and kill the monster. After successfully pulling off the heist of Kong's amulet and luring him to the shores of Skull Island, the Kraken reveals itself and the two Titans engage in battle, which eventually leads to the beast dragging Kong into the water with its tentacles with the intention of drowning him. However, Kong breaks free and briefly exchanges blows with the Kraken, but is once again grabbed and pulled underwater. After hitting the ocean floor, Kong utilizes a shipwreck to brutally bludgeon his assailant in the eyes, allowing him to break free and surface for air as the Kraken briefly retreats.

After surfacing, Kong stopped to help Annie rescue her animal companion, a giant bulldog-like creature named Dog, who was pulled out to sea due to a riptide caused by the fight. Taking advantage, the Kraken ambushed Kong and starts to drag him back to deeper waters to drown him again. After another brief yet ferocious brawl, Kong body-slams the Kraken onto a large rock formation, where he proceeds to violently pummel and beat the creature to the brink of death out of rage with his fists, presumably killing it.

Although it seemed that he emerged victorious, Kong is suddenly attacked from behind by the Kraken, who is revealed to be still alive but mortally wounded. Infuriated, he carries the aquatic beast over his head and, mustering all his strength, gruesomely tears it in half, killing the monster for good and avenging both his fallen friend and Hiro in the process. With the Kraken finally dead, Kong hurls his enemy's bisected corpse near the shoreline of Skull Island, accidentally causing seismic waves which swallows Annie and Dog, who are still nearby.

Personality[]

The Kraken is depicted as a malevolent, destructive, cunning, ruthless, sadistic and violent monster in nature, reacting hostilely towards human beings it encounters and attacking them unprovoked. The creature is also known to attack any ship that sailed too close to Skull Island unwarranted, often killing human crews by dragging them underwater to drown.

The beast is shown to have formed a rivalry with Kong after mortally wounding a young girl who the Titan had cared for. Even with that, any of them tried to attack each other, aware that both of them would have the advantage if attacked. The Kraken though still tried to provoke Kong enough to arrive by hurling several whales onto Skull Island. It will also respond viciously even to attacks that pose no threat to it, catching a harpoon thrown by Mike before throwing it back. Charlie described the Kraken as being "hell-bent on murdering everything."

Appearance[]

In terms of appearance, the Kraken is a ginormous, aquatic, chimeric cephalopod-like Titan combining aspects of various different animals. Its shape is defined by its octopus-like head with a more human-like torso extending from where its mouth would otherwise be. Its sharp serrated beak is lined with razor-sharp teeth and is pushed to the front of its head, giving it a more traditional face. The Kraken sports a large sail on its head, displays four pink eyes and six gill slits while its mouth is winged by two crustacean-like antennules.

From its neck down, it sports a total of twenty appendages, including two massive crustacean-like pincers, six, massive blue cephalopod-like tentacles and eight wispy red tentacles which seem to be able to retract into its body. Its last four appendages are attached to its lower body in place of legs, each sporting a hooked barb near the end. The Kraken has a long tail similar to that of a fish or a cetacean while several parts of its body are shown to be bioluminescent. The monster's blood is also dark blue in coloration.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Aquatic Titan Physiology: As an aquatic cephalopod-like Titan, the Kraken is incredibly powerful, possessing several physical and supernatural attributes.
    • Enhanced Strength: Due to its larger size, the Kraken is capable of restraining and throwing foes with its tentacles, throwing whales over long distances and even able to hold its own against Kong such as lifting and throwing him using one of its pincers.
    • Enhanced Durability: The Kraken's Immense bodily tissues provide it great resistance to physical injury, allowing it to withstand having its tentacles torn in half, having a set of its eyes impaled by a ship as well as several forceful punches and blows from Kong.
    • Enhanced Speed: The Kraken displays unique features of speed, allowing it to easily dodge Kong's attacks and travel extremely faster in water.
    • Enhanced Stamina: The Kraken's musculature is considerably efficient. It's virtually inexhaustible stamina enables it to exert itself at peak capacity for an undefined period of time without tiring at all, never needing to slow down when swimming at terrific speed in the water. Even during it's battle with Kong, the beast never stopped.
    • Enhanced Senses: The Kraken displays powerful senses, allowing it to detect prey on the shore without being visually seen. These extraordinary senses operate underwater and enable it to perceive the presence of potential prey through a combination of sensory cues, such as hydro-acoustic sensing or other unknown mechanisms. With this unique ability, the Kraken can accurately locate and capture victims by extending its red tentacles, all while remaining hidden beneath the water's surface. This enigmatic sense adds to the monster's stealth and makes it a formidable predator in its underwater environment.
    • Aquatic Nature: As an aquatic Titan, the Kraken is capable of staying fully submerged underwater indefinitely.
    • Bioluminescence: The Kraken is capable of using bioluminescence as the bright blue light it produces is able to light up the pitch black depths of the ocean.
    • Electric Shock/Venom: Through its tentacles, the Kraken possesses the unique ability of delivering potent and lethal electric shocks to its victims at once, slowly weakening and eventually killing it's victims. If the victim manages to survive the initial shock, it would gain a large scar in the area of shock and begin to develop a severe fever while the Kraken's venom, which is deposited during the shocking attack, takes effect, causing the victim to develop a severe fever. This venom is particularly detrimental to humans and gradually weakens the victim over time, eventually leading to their demise.

Abilities[]

  • High-level Intellect: The Kraken is impressively cunning, considering that it is capable of displaying the ability to learn and strategize.
  • Master Combatant: The Kraken is capable of holding it's own against other Titans such as Kong in combat, inflicting several grievous wounds on the Titan and even fighting him to a near stand-still. It was also able to use its tentacles to grapple opponents and use its massive chitinous forelimbs for stabbing attacks.
  • Tentacles: Similar to a cephalopod, the Kraken has dozens of tentacles that it can launch at an enemy and also capable of wrapping around and grasping opponents like Kong in combat, possibly to constrict them to death. Its red tentacles are extremely sharp enough to slice a Rock Bug in half as well as draw blood from slashing one of Kong's eyes, literally blinding him.
  • Sharp Beak and Pincers: The Kraken possesses a razor-sharp beak that it can use as a formidable weapon, capable of inflicting cutting damage to other Titans such as Kong. It also has massive crustacean-like pincers which allows it to grab, pick up and throw Kong with ease.

Weaknesses[]

  • Limited Durability: Despite its massive size and high durability, the Kraken lacks armor to resist attacks. During its battle with Kong, he was able to kill the creature after incapacitating it and relentlessly beats it with his fists before ripping it in half.
