Busy rebuilding, are they? How foolish to pretend they are safe, to think that closing some gate would mean the end of this... to forget that I'm still here. Well, it's their nature to be forgetful. Even their gods are absent-minded, Zeus has forgotten about everybody he has locked away in Tartarus. It is time for all of us to remind him. Go, do as I have told you. Make way for the Titans!
~ Kronos's monologue during the introduction cutscene in The New Atlantis.

Kronos is the overarching antagonist of the video game Age of Mythology and its remaster, Age of Mythology: Retold. He is an old enemy of the Olympian gods who he previously battled with, is an unseen enemy in Fall of the Trident, and makes a physical appearance in The New Atlantis. In the remaster, he is one of the main antagonists in the Arena of the Gods game mode.

In the original game, he was voiced by Lloyd Sherr. In the remaster, the voice actor is unknown.

Biography[]

Prior to the events of Fall of the Trident, Kronos and the Titans were the dominant gods which ruled over humanity in a tyrannical way. The Olympian gods would wage war against the Titans and defeat them, imprisoning them in the deepest part of the Underworld, Tartarus. With the Titans imprisoned, humanity lived in much more harmony, and Atlantis, the home of Arkantos, only had to deal with the occasional pirate attack. Poseidon became jealous of Zeus's status as chief of the Olympian gods, which Kronos planned to exploit by tempting him with more power, in exchange for his release from Tartarus. The only entrances to Tartarus were sealed by four adamantine doors, in Greece, Egypt, the Norselands and Atlantis, and could only be opened by a mortal. Poseidon would work with Gargarensis, an immortality-seeker, to be the mortal to accomplish this.

Athena, the daughter of Zeus, would catch wind of this. During the prologue in Fall of the Trident, she warned Arkantos in his dream that he must prepare for dark times ahead in which he must battle. Arkantos would eventually run into Gargarensis, who was digging his way into Erebus to reach the first gate to Tartarus, managing to stop it from opening. Gargarensis fled to Egypt and tunnelled Arkantos and his men in Erebus, but Zeus assisted them in getting to Egypt. During a dream, Arkantos learned about Gargarensis's motives from Athena, and about the history between the Olympian gods and the Titans. He also learned the consequences of what would happen if Gargaresnsis were to succeed in his plans, including the destruction of his city. Gargarensis fails to reach the Underworld in Egypt, thanks to the revival of Osiris, but fled to the Norselands. In the Norselands, he succeeds in opening the gate in Niflheim, but Thor seals it at the last second. Back at Atlantis, Gargarensis is stopped for good by Arkantos with assistance from Zeus, and Kronos remains imprisoned for at least another ten years.

Due to the destruction of Atlantis from a wrathful Poseidon, the evacuated citizens struggle to find and build a new home. Kronos watches over them in amusement over the fact that they have forgotten about him. He used this as an opportunity to free himself, by conceiving a servant who would kill the Atlantean theocrat leader Krios and pose as him. In Krios's appearance, he leads them to a sky passage that transported them to a Greek colony, and manipulates Kastor and his soldiers into worshipping the Titans and fighting back against the opposing Greeks. The Greeks call for help from their Norse and Egyptian allies, and Kastor suggests taking the fight to their respective undefended homelands, where they continue to worship Kronos. Upon returning, the servant deceives Kastor into destroying temples at Mount Olympus, and reveals his true colours. Kastor allies himself with Amanra and Ajax to destroy the Titans who were released in the Norselands, Egypt and Greece. The servant heads to the Tartarus gate in Atlantis, where Kronos frees himself and attempts to finish off Kastor's forces, but Gaia is summoned and sends Kronos back to Tartarus.
