Kryton

Kryton is the secondary antagonist of the Star Trek episode "Elaan of Troyius".

He was portrayed by the late Tony Young.

Biography[]

Kryton was from a noble Elasian family and had hoped to marry Elaan, the planet's Dohlman, whom he served as a bodyguard. He was furious when he heard she would instead marry the ruler of Troyius in order to cement a peace treaty between the two worlds, who had long since been enemies. To this end, he allied himself with the Klingons, who were hoping to gain control of the system's dilithium supplies.

Kryton and his subordinates beamed aboard the Enterprise to prepare the way for Elaan, who was to be transported to Troyius aboard the vessel. He was openly distrustful of the Troyian ambassador, Petri, and showed little respect for Captain Kirk either. He insisted the Enterprise officers kneel in Elaan's presence and rebuked them for speaking without permission. On Elaan's orders, he ejected Petri from her quarters when he tried to instruct her in Troyian customs and made no objection when Elaan ended up stabbing and badly wounding Petri.

Kryton headed to engineering in order to sabotage the Enterprise's dilithium crystals. He was discovered by Engineer Watson but killed him by snapping his neck, completing his sabotage. He sent a message to the Klingons reporting his success but the transmission was detected by the crew and he was quickly apprehended by Security. Kirk attempted to interrogate him but Kryton boasted of the Elasians' interrogation techniques. Aware that Kryton would be able to resist physical torture, Kirk sent out a call to Spock to perform a mind meld on him. Kryton promptly grabbed a phaser from a security guard and killed himself with it rather than give up the information.
