Kunihiro Mineishi is a major antagonist in the Junji Ito manga Hellstar Remina.

He is the son of President Mineishi, the CEO of the Mineishi Constructon Corporation which Remina Oguro has been hired to sponsor. Kunihiro had started out as being one of Remina's biggest fans, competing for her attention on multiple ocassions, especially with Naoya Goda. After taking Remina away from the Cult of Remina to his family's bomb shelter, Kunihiro attempts to rape her. When Remina attempts to fight back, Kunihiro frames her for advancing on him first, and kicks her out of the house back to the cult.

Biography[]

After Remina accepts offers to be a popstar, she is also offered an opportunity to be sponsored by the Mineshi Corporation, a construction company. The company's CEO, President Mineishi, introduces Remina to his son, Kunihiro, who is a huge fan of her work. Kunihiro then proceeds to show Remina his family's bomb shelter, which was built for three people. He also tells Remina about his older brother, Daisuke Mineishi, who wanted to be an astronaut, but that the family was strongly against it.

Kunihiro is then seen attending Remina's 16th birthday celebration, competing with Goda for her attention. When an unidentified person throws an egg at Remina, he along with Goda question the whole crowd to find the perpetrator. As soon as a mob forms outside, Remina, along with Kunihiro, Goda, and Yasumi run off to a flying car.

The group flys off to an apartment, where Kunihiro is arguing with Goda about who deserves the most credit for protecting Remina. Kunihiro then quickly switches to a news channel, which depicts the worldwide riots that have been occuring, along with a group of hooded men murdering the newscaster, declaring that to stop the hellstar, they must find and kill Remina and her father.

After the vice president of Remina's fanclub is shot to death by a pair of mobsters, the rest of the mob bust into the apartment, and attempt to kill the rest of the group. Kunihiro and the others escape into a garbage chute which lead down to the city's sewer system, where they manage to escape. However, the group is eventually corned by the mob, which gets Kunihiro to abandon them by claiming that he doesn't know any of them, and runs into an empty alleyway.

Kunihiro is encountered again by both Remina and Goda after Goda saved Remina from the mob following the firing of air missiles toward the hellstar. Kunihiro attempts to embrace the both of them, only for Goda to then assault him, and deliver several kicks and punches to him in an attempt to kill him. This makes Remina upset at Goda, which causes him to storm off dejected.

When the mob attempts to find Remina again, Kunihiro then takes Remina to his family's mansion, only to find that both of his parents are angry at him for having his phone off, and for bringing Remina with him, both of which they fear could lead the mob straight to them. When his father tells Kunihiro about the plan to bring the elites of Japan to planet Remina, Kunihiro tries to covince his parents to bring Remina with them, to which they both strongly disagree with, and requests for her to be left on Earth to the mob. Kunihiro, disgusted by this, takes Remina down to their bomb shelter in hopes of convincing his parents to take Remina with them by means of a hunger strike.

Even though Remina requests to be let go from the mansion, Kunihiro still insists that she go with him, and he then attempts to rape her to declare his love for her. Remina manages to push Kunihiro off of her, and smack him in the face, which angers him, claiming that she did this inspite of him being "nice" to her. When his parents come down to the bomb shelter, Kunihiro tells them that Remina had seduced him into sexually advancing on her, and this causes his mother to slap Remina and for Kunihiro and his parents to abandon her back towards the cult.

Kunihiro, his parents, and the other elites then take an escape shuttle to the Hellstar Remina, under the belief that the planet can be habitable, as well as the suspicion that the Mineishi's eldest son Daisuke is still alive on the planet. Unfortunately, when the escape shuttle crashes onto the planet, only Kunihiro, his parents, the Japanese prime minister and a few others are still alive. Unfortunately, the planet proves to be uninhabitable to humans due to its toxic atmosphere, its high gravity, and the hostile creatures that inhabit it. Kunihiro and his parents are implied to have been killed by one of the many tentacle like tongues that the planet possesses.

Personality[]

Kunihiro, having been raised in a wealthy family, and given special treatment for no actions of his own, appears to fully indulge in whatever he is gifted with, or that he has taken himself. According to him, Kunihiro also relies on various underhanded tactics that ultimately get his parents giving him what he wants, even when they deny his whims initially, which always works in his favor. Kunihiro also uses his wits to deceive people as a means of avoiding any personal responsibility for his own actions, even if this means abandoning his allies.

Kunihiro has also shown on several ocassions to be very cowardly, such as in a scene where the doomsday cult corner him, Remina, Goda, and Yasumi. He tries to claim that he has no affiliation with any of them, and then runs off into an empty alleyway to escape.

Trivia[]

  • Kunihiro acts as a foil of the following characters:
    • Remina Oguro. In this case, Kunihiro acts as a dark reflection of Remina. Like Remina, Kunihiro was raised in a well-off family, and was given special treatment for most of his life for no apparent reason or for any actions of his own. However, whereas Remina has shown hesitation for all of the gifts she has been given, has only received luxury due to the influence of others, and is generally kind-hearted and humble, Kunihiro has fully embraced what has been given to him, and is willing to cheat his way into getting what he wants, showing a generally rude and bombastic attitude.
    • Daisuke Mineishi. Based on dialogue between characters that discuss Daisuke's backstory, Kunihiro was clearly viewed in a much more favorable light by his family compared to his older brother. Also unlike his older brother, his family appears to more readily give into Kunihiro's whims than they do with Daisuke's. His family was strongly against Daisuke's aim of becoming an astronaut, which had caused him to run away from home when they ruined any chance of him getting that career, but are also willing to give into Kunihiro's demands when he goes numerous hunger strikes. Kunihiro and Daisuke also try to protect Remina from the doomsday cult, though for different reasons. Whereas Kunihiro does so in order to win over her affections, seeing her as a means to an end, Daisuke does so in the hopes of saving anyone salvageable from the hellstar eating Earth, seeing her as a person worthy of living life.
    • Naoya Goda. Despite being rivals, Goda and Mineishi have a lot of things in common, particularly in how they approach Remina. The both of them view Remina as nothing more than a means to an end, both are competitive for her attention, both use their statuses as justification for protecting Remina, both prove to be traitorous when they don't get what they want, and both have used the hysteria surrounding Remina Oguro to their advantage. What sets the both of them apart is their level of dedication and the means they use to accomplish their goals.
