Colonel Kurt Hansen is the secondary antagonist of the 2023 video game expansion Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

He is a former NUSA colonel turned military dictator of Night City's Dogtown combat zone. Hansen is the leader of the paramilitary gang BARGHEST, who he uses to control of district and aid his operations.

He is voiced by Eliah Mountjoy.

Biography[]

Hansen was a decorated colonel in the NUSA/Militech army. He was among the soldiers who fought in the Unification War, operating within the combat zones in Night City. When the war ended after the intervention of Arasaka, he disobeyed orders to leave and deserted the organizations, forming his own gang called the BARGHEST with his loyal soldiers.

Using military grade tactics, Hansen took control of a combat zone in the Pacifica district, where Militech had established multiple research facilities. He and BARGEST soon began to establish a weapons smuggling operation, using it to acquire and sell resources banned by both the NUSA and Free State of South California. Hansen also created a large social circle, hosting parties at his base in the Black Sapphire attended by high profile figures from around the world. He maintained control through both military experience and violence, which kept the respect of many BARGEST members.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty[]

Prior to the events of the game, Hansen had acquired the Neural Matrix and a rogue AI from one of the Militech bunkers beneath Dogtown. Contacted by NUSA operative Songbird, he made arrangements with her to unlock the device in exchange for assassinating NUSA president Rosalind Myers. He attacked Space Force One whilst it passed over Night City, leading it to crash within Dogtown. Depending on the actions taken by V, Hansen is either successfully kills Myers or unable to recover her. Regardless of Myers' fate, Hansen takes Songbird as a prisoner, planning to use her for his own activities, including blackmailing the NUSA with Myers's activities beyond the Blackwall.

If V successfully rescued Myers, Hansen encounters them when they infiltrate one of his party at the Black Sapphire to make contact with Songbird. After this, he later meets with them and NUSA operative Alex, both of whom are disguised as Netrunners who he'd hired to help Songbird unlock the Neural Matrix.

If V choses to betray the NUSA, Hansen is killed by Alex in a surprise attack after they remove the device. However, if V choses to betray Songbird, Hansen is alerted to their identities and kills Alex. He later tries to confront V as they escape the Stadium. The two engage in a lengthy fight, repeatedly stabbing one another in the face, chest, abdomed and hands, with V ultimately gaining the upper hand and leaving Hansen on his knees, utterly pulverised. V walks over to Hansen and stabs him through the neck with his own knife, before kicking him in the face, breaking his neck and killing him.

Trivia[]

  • In early development, Hansen was given the surname "Krausser". A file found in the game also indicates he was originally going to be a general rather than a colonel.
  • Hansen is partially based on Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. His voice files are also tagged "Kurtz".
  • Hansen serves as a playable character in the Phantom Liberty side quest "Balls to the Wall", which talks about his actions from the viewpoint of Paco Torres.
