~ Kurtz to Jughead. |
Kurtz is a supporting antagonist in the CW series Riverdale. He is a Riverdale High School student as well as a former member of the Southside Serpents. He is also a drug dealer and an obsessed "Gryphons & Gargoyles" player.
He was portrayed by Jonathan Whitesell, who also played Robin Goodfellow on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Biography[]
Kurtz first appears in an abandoned house and is visited by Jughead Jones who introduces himself as the Serpent King. The latter offers him an alliance between the Southside Serpents and the Gargoyle Gang, but Kurtz refuses, saying that he only follows the Gargoyle King's law. Although Jughead insists, Kurtz explains that they are all living a prophecy and the Gargoyle King will decide what happens next.
In the following episode, the Gargoyles now led by Gladys Jones, Jughead's mother, break into the Jones' trailer and Kurtz is among the thugs. In high school, Kurtz confronts Evelyn Evernever and Cheryl who claim the room in which he plays G&G with other Gargoyles. He calls the girls "bitches", which leads to a fight quickly being calmed down by Jughead and Toni's intervention. During a meeting, Kurtz explains that the chemistry lab break-in was necessary because it was among the most rewarding quests. After a brief confrontation with Fangs, Jughead says the Serpents and Gargoyles are one gang, though Kurtz says he plays by different rules.
During another Jughead meeting, Toni informs him that Kurtz tries to kill Fangs after he infiltrates their gang to spy on them. The gangster adds that he is going to ascend and drops him although Fangs is caught by Jughead and Sweet Pea. During a new meeting, Jughead is accompanied by FP Jones, his father and new sheriff of Riverdale, which displeases Kurtz. Jughead says the Serpents will help FP with his investigations in order to get paid back and survive. This change disturbs Kurtz who refuses to work for FP and leaves the room. After escaping Jughead, Kurtz is eventually caught and arrested by FP before being questioned at the police station. The thug explains why Baby Teeth was killed and informs that the Gargoyle King is holding the little princess who is Jellybean, Jughead's sister.
This causes the Jones family to tie up Kurtz and beat him badly into giving up more information about Jellybean. Kurtz explains that they only have to agree to play to find out what has become of her and they comply. After which, Kurtz guides the three through the first challenge and an argument breaks out when Gladys reveals her secret about the drug deal she's running. The next challenge has Gladys and Penny Peabody fighting and Kurtz stops Jughead from intervening or Jellybean will get hurt.
Following the fight, Jughead asks Kurtz to take him to see Jellybean, which he accepts but is blindfolded and Kurtz takes him to a junkyard. He then explains to Jughead that his sister is in one of the two refrigerators in front of him, and the second holds Jughead's fate. After Kurtz forces Jughead into a fridge at gunpoint, he calls Ricky DeSantos and orders him to kill Jellybean. Hearing this, Jughead smashes the fridge door and on his way out he discovers Kurtz's corpse and the Gargoyle King standing in front of him.
Personality[]
Kurtz was a mysterious and deranged teenager who actually believed in the existence of the Gargoyle King and Ascension. He also had a sly and defiant side, especially towards the Southside Serpents. While playing G&G, Kurtz seemed completely game driven and manic about how to play.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown why and who precisely in the disguise of the Gargoyle King killed Kurtz. Some believe it's because Kurtz broke the rules by ordering Jellybean's death or because the Gargoyle King wanted to protect Jughead, though the exact reason is unknown.
