The Kuva Liches are minor antagonists in the MMO third-person shooter Warframe.
They are high-ranking Grineer commanders under the command of the Worm Queen. Once disposable soldiers in the Grineer Empire, they were infused with the immortality-granting substance known as Kuva and gained powerful abilities upon being killed by a Tenno warrior.
They are the Grineer's answer to the Warframes and each serve as personal opponents to the Tenno.
Biography[]
Following the demise of her sister in the War Within quest, the Worm Queen stepped out of the shadows and sent out Kuva Siphons to prepare for the next phase of her plan to create powerful supersoldiers for her empire. These Kuva Siphons were brought to planets close to the Kuva Fortress, the mobile seat of Grineer power, and escorted by her elite forces to gather as much Kuva as possible. While the Tenno constantly interfered with the gathering process the Worm Queen still collected enough for her project to be put into motion.
Creation[]
Grineer soldiers chosen by the Queen herself to become Kuva Liches are brought to the Kuva Fortress and infused with a large quantity of Kuva, becoming Kuva Larvlings. These Kuva Larvlings are then sent back onto the field of battle in the hopes of encountering and being killed by a Tenno. Larvlings that successfully die at the hands of one become imprinted with the Warframe's essence, gaining powerful new abilities based on the elemental affinity of the Warframe. They are then transported back to the Kuva Fortress and outfitted with the strongest armor and weaponry the Grineer have to offer, completing their transformation into a Kuva Lich.
With newfound authority and power in their hands, the Kuva Lich introduces themselves to the Tenno that created them and claims territory in the Origin System, stealing resources from the Tenno should they complete missions inside their territory. Being nearly immortal, the Lich becomes increasingly stronger and claims more and more territory as the Tenno fights them.
Defeating a Lich[]
The only way to permanently defeat a Kuva Lich is to figure out their "Requiem Sequence", an energy frequency of sorts with which the Lich can revive themselves from death.
Once the correct sequence is assembled and used on a weakened Kuva Lich, the Tenno has the option to either kill the Lich permanently and gain their personal weapon or to purify their Kuva and convert them into an ally. Converted Kuva Liches will occasionally arrive on the battle field to temporarily aid the Tenno in their missions until they get bored or wounded and can even be assigned to serve as crewmembers in the Tenno's Railjack ship.
Trivia[]
- The Kuva Liches, just like their Corpus counterparts the Sisters of Parvos, were heavily inspired by the Nemesis System from Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
