Kyeong-suk is a minor antagonist of the 2007 South Korean movie Hansel and Gretel.
She was portrayed by Lydia Park.
Biography[]
Kyeong-suk, lost with her husband Byun Ji-wan, during a snowy day because they’re out of gas, meets with the protagonist Eun-Soo. He tells them to leave as soon as possible. Ji-wan tells him they'll take shelter in a local house instead. Eun-soo is surprised that they know about the isolated house. Then Man-bok appears. He makes them believe that Eun-Soo is his uncle.
In the house, they meet Man-bok’s little sisters, Young Hee and Jung Soon. The parents have left for several days. Kyeong-suk looks at statuettes and other valuables and tells the children never to touch such objects. Eun-Soo later comes back to the house, to Ji-wan’s apparent relief because he thought he lost himself. He then begins to sing about God, but his wife stops him because she doesn't think it was the right time.
The next day, the pair eats with the children after Ji-wan makes them pray. Young Hee asks Ji-wan’s wife to teach her to eat. She refuses under the pretext she is old enough. But Young Hee insists and the woman, infuriated, squeezes the little girl's hands to force her to stop. The two siblings rise in protest and the woman mocks them, saying they were too spoiled. Ji-wan defuses the situation, saying it is nothing, and they continue to eat.
Another day, Young Hee throws a snowball on Ji-wan. Not taking offence, he asks where Eun-Soo is and after, he pretends to notice a spot on the girl’s ear and starts rubbing it. Kyeong-suk later accuses the children to have stolen her ring. They deny it. An infuriated Kyeong-suk strongly pulls Jung Soon’s necklaces to make them talk. Ji-wan tries to calm her, but she sends him outside the house. He sits on the swing and thinks. Kyeong-suk meets him and tells Man-bok dropped the light on her and telekinetically strangled her. She claims the house is cursed and wants to leave as soon as possible. Ji-wan brushes it off and says he had a revelation.
Months pass and one day, Kyeong-suk goes missing. Ji-wan searches for her, without finding her. He asks Eun-Soo for help and together, they go where the protagonist saw her for the last time. They find instead a stuffed rabbit. Ji-wan, at first believing to be a joke, but finds some jewelries held by the cuddle. This gives him the idea of transforming the house into a kind of church. This also makes him forget about the location of Kyeong-suk.
Later, Eun-Soo finds her transformed into a living tree, condemned to stay there for eternity.
Personality[]
Contrary to Ji-wan, Kyeong-suk quickly appears to be unpleasant, self-righteous, and prone to anger. This probably comes from her twisted Christian beliefs. She berates the children for whatever thing she thinks as incorrect, even resorting to physical abuse. She also has a greedy side, having the intention to steal many things before running away from the house.
