Biography[]
Rock the Boat[]
Kyle crashes his car while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, hitting a mother and daughter who are out for a driving lesson. When the police arrive, Kyle refuses a field sobriety test as he "knows his rights". The 118 arrive on the scene and begin rescuing the mother and daughter who thankfully survive. Hen (who is temporary captain while Bobby is on a cruise) tells Chimney to check Kyle out before he gets arrested. Kyle, however, refuses treatment, even threatening to have Chimney fired if the latter treats him. As as result, Hen allows the police to handcuff Kyle, with Kyle resisting arrest.
As the mother and daughter are taken to the hospital, Hen is called over by Officer Williams who reveals that Kyle suddenly collapsed. Hen tries to save him and orders a neurosurgeon to be standing by at the hospital, but Kyle is later pronounced dead.
In the aftermath, Chief Simpson reveals to Hen that Kyle was the son of Councilwoman Olivia Ortiz, who is insisting that her son couldn't have been drunk and is ordering an investigation into his death. Hen is taken off active duty, but is cleared in the end when the tox reports reveal that Kyle was both drunk and on drugs.
Ashes, Ashes[]
Despite his death, Kyle's actions come back to haunt Hen. Blaming Hen for her son's death, Olivia Ortiz has Hen and Karen's adoption hearing for their foster daughter Mara cancelled. When Hen goes to confront her, Ortiz claims that she’s been digging into Hen’s past files as a firefighter and finds her unfit to adopt Mara. Not only is Hen and Karen’s foster license revoked by the end of the episode, Mara is taken by CPS and dragged out of their home.
No Place Like Home[]
Ortiz announces her bid to run for mayor in the upcoming elections. In a TV interview, she says that Kyle was the victim of a car accident and died after the firefighters failed to administer treatment, leaving out that he caused the accident and refused treatment. She also launches her campaign on the call to make public service personnel responsible for their action in the field.
After a judge forbids Hen and Karen from seeing Mara, Hen visits Ortiz to beg her to stop using Mara to torment her. She shows a video of how much Mara has improved during her time with the Wilsons and apologises for what went down with Kyle, but Ortiz refuses to forgive her, stating that if she has to live without Kyle, then Mara can live without the Wilsons. Later, however, Vincent Gerrard tricks Ortiz into admitting that she had prevented Mara from being adopted and had her taken from the Wilsons. This is played at a public meeting, showing Ortiz's true colors to the people of Los Angeles.
In the end, Ortiz is forced to resign from the city council and drop out of the mayoral race. Thus, she has lost her son, her career and her reputation.
