~ Kyogo in the afterlife to his son Sanemi. |
Kyogo Shinazugawa (不死川 恭梧, Shinazugawa Kyōgo) is a minor antagonist in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, but an important character to Sanemi Shinazugawa and Genya Shinazugawa, being their abusive father who is partially responsible for the wrathful personalities the two siblings have.
Appearance[]
Kyogo is shown to be a large and muscular man that differentiates from his more petite and smaller wife Shizu Shinazugawa. He has a short crop of unkept black hair, with on the left side of his face a large scar running across his cheek. He has slating eyes with dark irises. His large frame, scar and dark eyes make him look like an intimidating man.
Kyogo wears a kimono with on it, long irregular, concave hexagon patterns that have a pale lavender tint, as well as black.
Personality[]
Kyogo is an extremely wrathful and ill-tempered man that took his aggression out on his own family and other people in his village, which would eventually be the cause of his death. Even after losing his life, he would be remembered as being a “pathetic” man that would use his strength to abuse weaker people.
Just as in the afterlife, he kept being dominant over the remainder of his family, which was his wife, as shown by his desire for control and forcefully rejecting his son Sanemi Shinazugawa to reunite with his mother. He then shows to have a rather egotistical side, telling Sanemi to be thankful that he’s his father, and that his son’s near-death experience was only endured because he obtained his father’s strong body.
Story[]
Backstory[]
At some point in the past, Kyogo would come to marry a woman named Shizu and would come to have seven children, Sanemi Shinazugawa being their oldest. Because of Kyogo's wrathful nature, he would repeatedly abuse his family, and Shizu, despite her petite frame, would always try to protect her children from him. Kyogo’s anger would affect the rest of the village, causing him to be hated by both his family and the rest of the town. He would eventually meet his end by being stabbed by an unknown person whom he presumably got into a fight with.
Swordsmith Village Arc[]
During the fight with Hantengu’s personality Karaku, Genya Shinazugawa is seconds away from being impaled by him, which causes him to suddenly think back to his childhood. This includes Kyogo’s abusive nature towards him and his family, as well as what happened to his mother and siblings after Kyogo died. Showing the eventual protective nature of his son Sanemi to his family.
Sunrise Countdown Arc[]
After the battle with Muzan Kibutsuji where his physical body had now vanished, Sanemi Shinazugawa began to have a near-death experience where he briefly went into the afterlife. He was able to connect with his mother again and offered her as a companion to both enter hell together until Kyogo suddenly appeared and demanded that Shizu Shinazugawa has to stay with him, which angers Sanemi greatly. He then pushes Sanemi away back to the normal world, while claiming that Sanemi is lucky he obtained his strong body from his father.
