Martha Mallon, better known as La Llorna, is the main antagonist of the Riverdale episode "Ghost Stories". She is a vengeful spirit that exists in Rivervale, a parallel universe to Riverdale.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Centuries ago, Martha Mallon was once a loving mother and a nurse in the children's ward in Rivervale's first hospital. During those years, they lost many children for various reasons like poxs, the cold, and careless doctors, but the townspeople blamed Martha for their deaths and accused her of being a witch. So, they dragged Martha and her children to Sweetwater River, dragging them with rocks and threw them by the dark waters. They drowned, and Martha became an undead spirit called "La Llorna" swearing revenge on the townspeople with their children's lives.
Return to Rivervale[]
La Llorna was eventually summoned to Rivervale by Darla Dickson to kill Toni's infant son, Anthony, as revenge for Toni accidentally killing Darla's son. She breaks into Thornhill and tries to drown Juniper, Cheryl Blossom's 9 year-old niece, in a bathtub, but Cheryl breaks into the bathroom in time and saves Juniper. Later that night, she breaks into the Cooper house and kills Betty's unborn child with Archie by absorbing the fetus from her womb in her sleep.
She tries to capture baby Anthony from his crib the next day, but is forced to flee when Anthony starts crying. Betty and Toni learn about La Llorna from a woman whose daughter La Llorna killed. So, Betty, Toni, Cheryl and her grandmother Rose hold a seance at Thornhill to summon La Llorna. La Llorna temporarily possesses Rose to communicate in the seance, during which she reveals her true identity and that she was summoned by Darla Dickenson. Betty and Toni confront Darla and demand that she call off La Llorna. but Darla explains that she can't be called off. Once La Llorna is summoned, she won't stop until she gets what she came for: Toni's baby.
Freedom from the curse[]
La Llorna breaks into the Whyte Wyrm and effortlessly overpowers the Southside Serpents guarding Anthony and finally captures him. She prepares to drown Anthony in Sweetwater River, but thankfully Betty and Toni arrive just in time to stop her. Toni ultimately sacrifices herself by offering to take Martha's place, not just to save Anthony but also out of guilt for accidentally killing Darla's son. Martha accepts the deal and returns Anthony to Toni before trading places with her, making Toni the new "La Llorna" while Martha's soul finally rests peacefully.
