"The New Moon will rise above, and all who obey shall rise with it!"
~ Laatvulon

Laatvulon ("Last-Night"), known as the Demon from the East and the Black Beast, is a major antagonist in The Elder Scrolls Online, serving as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Mulaamnir) of the Dragonhold chapter.

A fearsome black Dragon, Laatvulon was a servant of Kaalgrontiid who wished to help his master fulfil the Prophecy of the Dark Aeon, where the latter would ascend as Akatosh's equal. He is also the rival of Nahfahlaar.

History[]

While much of Laatvulon's past is shrouded in mystery, like all Dragons he is descended from Akatosh, chieftain of the Nine Divines and the first Dragon. It is believed that he came from Akavir, as black and red Dragons are believed to have originated from that continent. Like all Dragons, Laatvulon strived for conquest and domination, and established such a terrible reputation that upon arriving on Tamriel, he was named "Demon from the East". At some point, Laatvulon entered the servitude of another Dragon, Kaalgrontiid, who had broken off from Alduin's rule to form his own cult of Dragons & mortals in Elsweyr.

Either before or after he became Kaalgrontiid's servant, Laatvulon entered a bitter rivalry with a red Dragon named Nahfahlaar, with their rivalry lasting so long neither could remember what started their feud. Eventually, it became apparent to Nahfahlaar that Laatvulon would win their rivalry. To counter this, Nahfahlaar entered an alliance with the great Khajiit hero Ja'darri and the Dragonguard, who were also fighting the Black Beast.

Ja'darri had gained the Mask of Alkosh but fearing it wouldn't be enough to defeat Laatvulon, pleaded with Nahfahlaar to empower it to give her the edge. For unknown reasons despite his own vested interests in seeing the Black Beast destroyed, Nahfahlaar refused, though he did give her one of his horns to aid her. Even with the Dragonhorn, Ja'darri and the Dragonguard were unable to destroy Laatvulon and instead were forced to imprison him within the caverns beneath Doomstone Keep.

Though Laatvulon was imprisoned, the act cost Ja'darri her life, with the Dragonguard blaming Nahfahlaar for his limited aid, breaking down the alliance between them. Though Nahfahlaar was forced to flee, he would always keep a watchful eye for his rivals return. Kaalgrontiid and his followers would also be imprisoned within the Halls of Colossus after Laatvulon's defeat.

Eventually in the Second Era during the Three Banners War, Kaalgrontiid and his followers would be accidentally freed from their imprisonment by Abnur Tharn, with Kaalgrontiid initiating his plan to gather enough power via harvested souls in Aeonstones to become the Dark Aeon, a New Moon to become the new third moon, all in the hope of becoming the equal of Akatosh. With their return, all their other allies would also return to carry out their master's will, including Laatvulon, who would escape his own imprisonment through unknown means. To further Kaalgrontiid's plans, Laatvulon would forge his own cult, the New Moon Cult, comprised of vulnerable Khajiit who wished to escape the Khahaten Flu.

Nahfahlaar, sensing his ancient enemy's return, returned to Elsweyr to do battle with Laatvulon, only for the Black Beast to defeat him thanks to his newfound power. Nahfahlaar barely escaped and renegotiated a new alliance with the Vestige and the reformed Dragonguard. Laatvulon would later try to convince fellow Dragon Yahgrondu to join his cult, only for the latter to reject his offer, causing Laatvulon to kill Yahgrondu before the Vestige could save him. In an attempt to kill them, Laatvulon had one of his followers raise Yahgrondu's corpse before escaping.

Tracked to the New Moon Fortress, the Vestige witnesses Laatvulon culling Dragon Joorahmaar's dissenting protests before delivering a sermon to his cultists, commanding them to relinquish their souls to the Aeon crystals. When the Vestige halts the ritual, an enraged Laatvulon commands his followers to kill them, causing the Vestige to flee into the fortress and Laatvulon to send his minions after them to no avail. Laatvulon personally gives chase afterwards, raining Frost Breath on the Vestige in an attempt to kill them, though he too fails once the Vestige jumps into a ravine,

When the Vestige makes their way to the Walk of Ancient Kings, Laatvulon reveals his awareness to their presence, before summoning multiple skeletal warriors and sending his champion Ra'khajin to kill them. As the fight drags on, Laatvulon constantly intervenes, teleporting Ra'khajin away and raining Frost Breath on the Vestige, but once Ra'khajin begins losing, Laatvulon forsakes his champion, allowing the Vestige to kill him. Nahfahlaar arrives and declares that he & Laatvulon must settle their rivalry, to which the Black Beast agrees.

After the Vestige empowers the Mask of Alkosh, they find Laatvulon attempting to empower himself with the Aeonstone via his cultists. Nahfahlaar and Laatvulon do battle, but the Vestige and Dragonguard attempt to aid the red Dragon, only for Laatvulon to send a wave of skeletal warriors after them. After a stalemate is reached, Laatvulon notices the Vestige in possession of the Mask of Alkosh and descends before personally attacking them.

Despite throwing all of his might against his enemies, including sending wave upon wave of his skeletal minions against them, Laatvulon is eventually defeated through the combined might of the Vestige, Nahfahlaar and the Dragonguard. Though beaten, Laatvulon uses his last words to mock his foes, swearing that Kaalgrontiid's plans would still reach fruition before dying, with Nahfahlaar bidding his brother/rival farewell before destroying his remains, ending the threat of the Demon from the East once and for all.
