“ | Captain didn't say anything about bringing the other three of you alive. So now, Fort. Can you read what I'm saying, or does the gun speak loudly enough for you? | „ |
~ Laggart threatening Fort, Ann, and Salay. |
“ | Captain, I can't take the lies. I know what you're really doing. I know you're waiting until I'm calm and comfortable to toss me over then. It's cruel, waiting to kill a man until he's sure you won't. I figured you for someone better than that. | „ |
~ Laggart refusing to believe Tress's mercy. |
Laggart is a major antagonist of the Brandon Sanderson novel Tress of the Emerald Sea. He is a ruthless but somewhat unintelligent pirate and the right-hand Captain Crow. Upon her ship, the Crow's Song, he worked as a cannon master, and sabotaged the cannons so that they would sink ships instead of just detaining them. He would later participate in her plot to get the ship to Xisisrefliel. After her defeat, he began to better himself and became a loyal member of Tress's crew.
Apearance[]
Laggart was a thin man with wiry muscles. He was short but had a long thin neck. He wore an unbuttoned military coat with a sword and two pistols.
Personality[]
“ | Laggart was not a smart man. True, the things he lectured people on could fill a dictionary — but what he actually knew would barely fill a postcard. | „ |
~ Hoid on Laggart. |
Laggart was arrogant and self-important, seemingly believing himself to be one of the most important people on the ship. Although he understood his trade well, he vastly overestimated his own intelligence and, although he wasn't an idiot, wasn't particularly smart either. He enjoyed lecturing others, although he didn't have much to say. Despite having a power-hungry streak, he was not good at working on his own and preferred to take orders.
As Crow's right-hand, he was ruthless and murderous. He showed nothing but spite for the rest of the crew and did not care about anyone but himself and his own plans, not caring how many he needed to kill to ensure Crow's success. This selfishness is motivated by a belief he developed during his childhood of how all people merely looked out for themselves. He genuinely did not comprehend altruism. After this belief was disproven, he began to try to show more empathy and helped those around him.
Biography[]
Laggart grew up in a difficult environment where he grew up believing all people acted solely in self-interest. At some point he went into piracy and became the right-hand of Captain Crow, and she made him her first mate on her ship the Crow's Song. He worked as cannon master and was complicit in Crow's plan to make her crew deadrunners so they could reach to Crimson Sea and meet with the dragon Xisisrefliel.
