Lamashtu is the main antagonist of the 2023 supernatural horror film The Exorcist: Believer, a sequel to the famous 1973 horror film The Exorcist. She is a demon that possesses Katherine and Angela Fielding.
She was portrayed by Lize Johnston.
Biography[]
Fifty years after the events of the first film, Lamashtu takes possession of Angela and Katherine after taking them to Hell, when Angela and Katherine have a seance in an attempt to communicate with Angela’s deceased mother, Sorenne. Both girls are found three days later in a barnyard. Lamashtu makes Angela attempt to murder her father by suffocation and makes Katherine scream in church. Victor takes Angela to a hospital where Lamashtu mocks a nurse and Victor and Angela’s neighbor, Ann, for an abortion she had which resulted in her getting kicked out of her convent. Victor then commits Angela to a mental hospital.
Ann, believing Angela to be demonically possessed recommends a book written by Chris MacNeil after being recommended a book she wrote about the exorcism and possession of her daughter Regan from the demon, Pazuzu. Victor visits Chris MacNeil, and during an attempted exorcism, Lamashtu tells Chris that Regan is dead and is in hell and then causes a possessed Katherine to stab Chris in the eyes repeatedly only to be stopped by Victor. Chris is rendered handicapped and is taken to recuperate at the hospital.
Victor and Katherine's parents attempt to perform the exorcism without the assistance of priest, Father Maddox (due to the Catholic Church deeming it too dangerous) with the help of the pastor of Katherine’s parents, a healer named Dr. Beehibe, and Ann. Lamashtu mocks them during the exorcism and causes the crucifix that Ann is holding to burn her hand. Lamashtu reveals that Victor tried to save his deceased wife when he was told that he would be unable to save both her and their unborn daughter. Declaring that the families had to choose which girl lived and which died, Father Maddox arrives in spite the orders from the Catholic Church. However, Lamashtu uses her supernatural powers to contort his neck until it broke killing him. Tony, Katherine’s father, chooses Katherine to be the one to live.
Angela momentarily flatlines with it appearing that Katherine was spared. However, the young girl finds herself back in a waterway she and Angela went through with Lamashtu, revealing that she had chosen her. She then drags Katherine's soul into eternal damnation, leaving Angela to return back to the living world.
Trivia[]
- Much like Pazuzu, Lamashtu is named after a Mesopotamian demon who was infamous for antagonizing expectant mothers and kidnapping children to feed on their bones and blood.
- As demons can communicate with each other, it’s likely that Lamashtu and Pazuzu were in contact as Lamashtu mentioned Regan many times to Chris.
