Villain Overview

I will give you LIFE again, but at a PRICE. All I ask is for you to start a Cult in my name. Do we have a deal?
~ The One Who Waits to the Lamb after the latter's death.
Sacrifice reborn Vessel, ascend once more and take true form; no longer a servant, no less than a God.
~ The ending text after the Lamb usurps The One Who Waits.

The Lamb is the titular main protagonist of the 2022 roguelite video game Cult of the Lamb. The Lamb, true to their name, was a literal sacrificial lamb killed by the Bishops of the Old Faith as the last member of their species, until they were given a second chance at life by The One Who Waits in exchange for becoming his vessel and starting a cult in his name.

The Lamb is not inherently evil due to the game's open-ended nature and can be relatively well-intentioned. Regardless, as part of being a cult leader, the Lamb must compromise morality to some extent in order to succeed; the extent of how far they go depends on the player.

Powers and Abilities[]

The extent of the Lamb's abilities before being sacrificed and wearing the Red Crown are unknown. It is only after the Lamb dons the Red Crown and gaining its power that the Lamb's abilities are fully seen. It can be presumed, however, that the Lamb was no different than any other mortal and their shown abilities were given by the Crown itself.

The two most prominent traits of the Lamb are their combat proficiency and how they interact with the followers of their cult. In combat, the Lamb has remarkably quick dodging, as they're semi-invulnerable to most attacks during the dodge's duration. This is coupled with their high proficiency in melee combat, which expands to any melee weapon they choose before embarking on a crusade. The Lamb is also able to emit projectiles and utilize other supernatural powers. Similar to choosing weapons before starting crusades, one power/projectile attack can be chosen in the same way as well.

The Lamb - despite never speaking beyond bleating - is shown to have some degree of charisma, which is seen through many types of interactions they have with their followers, as the followers will be convinced into doing things they would never normally do, which can include taking part in unsafe to outright near-fatal situations. If a cult has a dissenter, the Lamb is able to convince them to snap out of it and revert them to a loyal follower, although this can take days to perform. They also have the option of simply killing the dissenter outright, though this usually has a negative effect on the Lamb's reputation with their cult.

Tarot cards that grant the Lamb additional powers or upgrades can be discovered throughout the game. There are two types of tarot cards that can be found: Either ones found in random areas during crusades that grant them permanent abilities or upgrades, or cards that can be given by Clauneck that the player can choose, although these cards only last for the duration of the crusade.

The Lamb can perform rituals and doctrines that provide many different effects, most of them being supernatural. Rituals can temporarily provide something for the cult, or at the very least, just benefit the Lamb. These rituals can include altering the bodies of the followers, so they don't need to eat for three days, bringing back a deceased follower to life, magically making all partially grown crops to be fully grown or grant followers the ability to never get tired while working for three days.

Doctrines are permanent upgrades the Lamb can bestow upon their cult. They can allow them to learn of even more rituals (although only one of two can be chosen when unlocked) or give followers permanent abilities and traits, such as making dead followers turn into fertilizer or making them develop a taste for meat of their own kind.

Personality[]

Due to many of their actions depending on the player, the Lamb's moral standards are undefined from the get-go. They can either be a benevolent, nurturing leader, a ruthless tyrant or anything in between depending on how the player plays them. The Lamb is, however, always eager to kill their enemies from the Old Faith en masse and does so with a smile.

However, there are some things that are known about their personality: for example, the promotional media makes it clear that they have a genuinely affable personality, very picky fashion tastes, and they get easily flustered. The Lamb enjoys finding opportunities of jobs to make followers to do, and it's clear that they genuinely care for Ratau since, should the player give the rat to the Red Fox, they will try to save him and even cry. Judging by their reactions when playing Knucklebones, it also seems that they don't take defeat well. They dislike alcohol beverages, anything Old Faith related, and there's a subtle indication that they dislike when when their followers die; when carrying a corpse to a grave, the Lamb will have a frowning expression. They're also capable of marrying one or several of their followers, but it's unclear how much they actually care for their spouses since it can be done at any time on a whim. The Lamb can have sex with the Goat as well, which results in both of them vomiting after.

Since maintaining the faith of the Lamb's followers is one of the most important factors of the game, meeting followers' needs will be one of their constant duties. There are many ways they can go about maintaining respect from their followers, ranging from caring and benevolent acts, to controlling them with a cold and uncaring iron fist. Benevolent acts may include feeding them high quality meals, letting them rest while sick, building increasingly better quality homes, gifting them money and gifts, performing benevolent rituals such as Holy Day (which lets followers relax and not have to work for a day), bringing a deceased follower back from the dead and rescuing followers' loved ones during crusades. More malevolent actions can include sacrificing a follower via ritual for personal gain, forcing followers to eat disgusting, poisonous meals sometimes made from follower meat or starve, intentionally overworking them, unjustly putting them in prison for others to taunt them, chopping up a deceased follower's body in front of others, forcing them to fight to the death or even murder them on the spot to intimidate nearby viewers.

Biography[]

The Lamb was killed alongside the rest of their species by the Bishops of the Old Faith in the attempt to prevent a prophecy that foretold The One Who Waits' return. They were imprisoned for an unknown amount time before being escorted by a swordsman who tried to vocally comfort them on the way to the execution. The Lamb would be decapitated though by doing so, the Lamb ended up finding themselves face to face with The One Who Waits after their own death and, after accepting to be revived in exchange for making a cult in The One Who Waits' name, received the Red Crown and its incredible powers. The Lamb would then revive and attack several swordsman before escaping their previous death site.

During their escape from the Old Faith, the Lamb met Ratau while also getting their first follower, and was shown by the elder rat the lands that once belonged to him when he attempted to start a cult but failed.

As the Lamb created their cult, they proceeded to fight each of the Bishops, killing them and taking their hearts. The One Who Waits was impressed by the Lamb's work, but deemed to have his crown back, inviting the Lamb into his realm.

However, it turns out that The One Who Waits intends to sacrifice the Lamb (and likely their flock too) to free himself. Whether the Lamb accepts their fate and allows the god to kill them or nor is up to the player, but if they do refuse, then they find themselves fighting against Baal and Aym and The One Who Waits himself (if they accept to being killed the screen fades to black and the credits start playing).

After the fight, the Lamb becomes an actual god as The One Who Waits loses his godhood. Whether the Lamb spares the former god and turns him into one of their followers or kills him is once again up to the player (although The One Who Waits will end up as a follower regardless since, even if killed, he will be brought back to life by the [Mystic Seller).

The Lamb is eventually visited by the Mystic Seller, who tells them that the Bishops of the Old Faith are unable to pass and are forced to relive their agonies, before ordering the Lamb to resolve this situation. The Lamb does as told, facing the four Bishops once more and recruiting them to their cult.

Trivia[]

  • The character being genderless and nameless is a deliberate choice by the game's developers so players can more easily insert themselves into the role and shape the Lamb's personality as they see fit.[1]
  • On November 2, 2022, a Twitter user by the tag of @Undlark animated a short video of the Lamb performing the "Lamby-Lamby dance" from Gravity Falls to The One Who Waits, which the developers have since declared to be canon to the events of the game via a quote retweet on their own Twitter account, although they were likely just joking.
  • While the Lamb is by right immortal, resurrecting whenever they die on a crusade, they can permanently die if the player gets rid of all their followers, perishing in two days if at least one follower isn’t acquired.
