~ The Lamb to Ratau about getting revenge on the Old Faith. |
The Lamb is the titular main protagonist of the 2024 comic run The First Verse. The Lamb, along with their entire species, was sacrificed to stop a prophecy though after making a deal with The One Who Waits, starts a cult in his name with guidance of an ally.
Personality[]
The Lamb's personality before getting the Red Crown is unknown though we hear The Lamb never had a friend in their mortal past, was submissive towards their fate of being executed, and was possibly betrayed by someone in their life.
The Lamb initially, despite making a deal with The One Who Waits, doesn't care for creating a cult or serving him in any way and is entirely out for their own agenda. When they gain their first potentional follower, Nana, they are annoyed by the recommendation of indoctrinating them when suggested by Ratau. They overall seem filled with the feeling of invincibility once they gain the crown. They are somewhat cocky and very snarky and teasing, enjoying annoying Ratau and denying their promise deal of saving them. The Lamb as of Issue #1 doesn't initially care for starting a cult or freeing The One Who Waits, simply wanting revenge for the loss of their fellow Lambs who they all mourn for though once they get devotion power from Nana's gift, deciding a new goal, to free everyone endangered by the Old Faith. They are also more merciful toward Old Faith members as seen in Issue #2, where they state they are willing to show mercy and not murder any Old Faith believers if they show devotion to The One Who Waits and assumingly joins their cult though does not hesitate to resort to mass murder when their words fall upon deaf ears.
The Lamb in The First Verse is a considerably better and more morally correct person than in the original game, not doing most of the crimes the Lamb does even the bare minimum crimes.
The Lamb, as seen time and time again, possibly due to their trauma from losing their people to the Old Faith and general self doubt worry of not being enough for a cult, has a short temper towards most people when they feel threatened or aren't getting their way, such as when they threaten Clauneck by holding a blade to their body for answers on what possible dangers are coming their way. Even then, after they call Clauneck a slug, Clauneck corrects the Lamb, stating they are a duck to which the Lamb corrects themselves and calls Clauneck a duck as requested by Clauneck.
The Lamb is initially scared of their possible fate, being betrayed, and general threats to them and their cult though by the final issue of The First Verse, they are no longer concerned and paranoid, deciding to face fate and not caring if they will some day die.
They have a close relationship with Nana, their first ever follower and Ratau, their mentor, with The Lamb considering Nana a friend and being upset when Nana is distraught at The Lamb turning the "home" into a cult.
Biography[]
At some point before Issue #1, the lamb species would be hunted by the Old Faith and The Lamb would go on the run, foraging to survive[1] but would eventually be caught.
The Lamb is seen just before their execution where they seem to have accepted their fate and or learnt helplessness though are still fearful of their upcoming end. They don't show any malice to the Old Faith follower escorting them to their demise and talk to them briefly, asking if the execution will hurt. Once executed, They encounter The One Who Waits as seen in the game seemingly questioning their current situation though leaves little questioning to the deal of starting a cult in return of revenge, replying "Oh, Absolutely."[2]
They return to the living, executing several Old Faith heretics before encountering Ratau, a former vessel of The One Who Waits. They speak ignorantly of the crown and of Ratau though is convinced by him to follow him through the woods. While travelling through the woods, The two find a soon-to-be sacrificed purple rabbit named Nana. The Lamb, still not onboard with the cult concept saves Nana and tells Nana she is free to leave though Ratau stops her, taking all three of them to the ruins of Ratau's previous cult.[2]
Lamb is still not on board with the cult ideology, and teases Ratau about The One Who Waits' waiting an eternity for someone like them, to which the Lamb replies that The One Who Waits should know the skill of being patient for that very reason as they eat a fruit from a bush. They are seen crownless, seemingly content with relaxing in the beautiful ruins of Ratau's old cult though when fueled by Nana's devotion from a gift, a wooden depiction of The Lamb, they decided to start the cult, but more importantly to them, freeing everyone who may die to the Bishops of the Old Faith.[2]
The Lamb starts cutting through Darkwood, gaining followers and confidently killing heretics while the Bishops of the Old Faith plot on how to stop them. The Lamb meets a seer named Clauneck. Clauneck questions if The Lamb believes in destiny immutable to which The Lamb states they no longer due to them believing they've carved their own destiny. The Lamb's cards that Clauneck pulls foretell a negative fate to The Lamb's anger. THe Lamb puts their blade up to Clauneck's "neck" in an attempt to threaten them into telling them what the cards mean, learning that they will be betrayed by someone. The Lamb encounters a heretic who pleads to join their cult though due to being paranoid on Clauneck's cards, believes that the heretic plans to betray them though still decides to try and take the heretic in though quickly realizes that they were correct in their assumption. Leshy rises from behind them and transforms the deceitful heretic, named Amdusias, into a beast who attempts to kill The Lamb though fails and is indoctrinated by the Lamb, with the Lamb being merciful with Amdusias. The Lamb finds the Commandment Stone, a stone that will take free will from their followers. The Lamb speaks to Haro who tells The Lamb about how the "rotten world, now rotted to the beams," came to be though The Lamb stills go through with the Commandment Stone, using it to soon ensure that they'd never experience betrayal.[3]
The Lamb returns to the cultsite to his followers joy though Nana is distraught to learn of The Lamb gaining a commandment stone runs off into the woods to The Lamb's disappointment. Ratau keeps The Lamb from being worried over Nana by showing them the temple that their followers and possibly Ratau himself built for them. The Lamb creates the doctrine from the commandment stone to stop betrayal while Nana watches in sadness seeing the "home" become a cult.
The Cult of the Lamb begins to struggle and starve as The Lamb's pride is damaged and they are afraid of being betrayed as the Commandment Stone will only ensure loyalty for a short amount of time and so The Lamb is afraid to leave the cult grounds though with encouragement, and begging, from Nana, they return to Darkwood. While in Darkwood, The Lamb has a run in with Barbatos and is heavily injured by their venom though manages to defeat and indoctrinate Barbatos before going on to fight more Darkwood creatures. The Lamb returns to the cult grounds with food though due to their injuries, passes into the afterlife though is not dead. They speak with The One Who Waits where they tell One Who Waits about their worries where they tell The Lamb that if The Lamb doesn't kill the Bishops, the Bishops will soon find and kill their cult. The Lamb is told for wounds as deep as the ones they gained from the Barbatos fight, devotion from their followers cannot heal them and only a sacrifice from one of The Lamb's followers can fully heal them to which The Lamb decides against such an act.[1]
Relationships[]
Nana[]
Nana, is a purple bunny and the first follower that the Lamb gains. The Lamb considers Nana a friend of theirs, initially being content with just spending their time doing nothing and relaxing at the ruins of Ratau's former cult with Nana until Nana makes a small wooden figure of The Lamb, giving the Lamb a taste of devotion and inspiring them to go down the path of cults, to Nana's disappointment.
Nana, to save the Lamb, would sacrifice herself to the Lamb with a dagger in an act of suicide.
Ratau[]
Ratau is a mentor to The Lamb. The Lamb initially doesn't want help or any guidance from the "flea-bitten old stray" though soon becomes close with them.
