I was the one who made all of your lives a living nightmare! I gave monsters the ability to track demigods! I am Lamia, the butcher of the tainted!
~ Lamia to her brother Alabaster C. Torrington.

Lamia is the main antagonist of "Son of Magic," a short story in The Demigod Diaries by Rick Riordan and Haley Riordan. She is an ancient monster who was once a queen cursed by Hera, and has since then vowed revenge against the gods and all of their children. In ancient times, she cursed all half-bloods, making her the greater-scope villain of the Camp Half-Bood Chronicles in general as well.

Biography[]

Ancient times[]

Lamia was once a demigod daughter of Hecate and the queen of Lybia in ancient times. She fell in love with the god Zeus, and with him had two children named Altheia and Demetrius. Zeus' affair with her caught the attention of the goddess Hera, who killed the children and turned Lamia into a monster. Grieved by this loss, Lamia used her magic to give all monsters the ability to track demigods, believing that Hera would understand her pain if thousands of demigods died.

In "Son of Magic"[]

Following the defeat of Kronos' armies, Lamia pledged herself to Gaea as her new Mistress. Lamia hoped to rally her fellow children of Hecate under Gaea's banner to enact revenge against the gods. However, there was another child of Hecate, a 16 year old demigod named Alabaster C. Torrington, who was more popular among her siblings. Gaea tasked Lamia with killing Alabaster, who killed her several times, but Lamia always regenerated in an instant to continue hunting her brother.

Lamia disguised herself as a mortal woman to get the help of a mortal named Dr. Howard Claymore in finding her brother. Dr. Claymore refused, so she attacked him in a coffee shop, revealing her monstrous form and killing the bartender Burly Black. She and Claymore fought for some time before Claymore escaped the scene. Claymore took the time to get to Alabaster's house to get his help in fighting Lamia, but she had followed him there, having put a curse on him that broke Alabaster's magic barrier. Claymore and Alabaster fought side-by-side in defending each other against her. Eventually, Alabaster found the perfect magic spell that would trap Lamia in the earth for good; but Lamia cornered him and threatened to kill Claymore if Alabaster spoke one word of the spell. Claymore resisted and died in the process.

Directly following Claymore's death, the goddess Hecate intervened to separate her siblings as far apart as she could. The current whereabouts of Lamia are unknown, but Hecate assures Dr. Claymore that Lamia would be temporarily unable to harm Alabaster.

Quotes[]

I can still see their lifeless bodies in front of me. ...Altheia wanted to be an artist. I remember the days when she apprenticed under my kingdom's finest sculptors. ...She was a child prodigy. Her skills rivaled even those of Athena. Demetrius was nine, five days from his tenth birthday. He was a wonderful and strong boy, always trying to make his mother proud. He was willing to do anything in order to prepare for the day he took his place as king of Libya. They both worked so hard, they both had amazing futures ahead of them. But then what did Hera do? She brutally murdered them simply to punish me for accepting Zeus's courtship! She's the one who deserves to rot in Tartarus!
~ Lamia explaining her backstory and motives.
You know what happened next, brother? My life as queen may have been over, but my hatred was just beginning. Using Mother's power I crafted a very special incantation, one that allowed all the monsters in the world to sense the taint of half-bloods... Maybe after a few thousand more of you die, Hera, the goddess of family, will finally understand my pain!
~ Lamia explaining her curse.
