~ Lancel to Cersei Lannister. |
Ser Lancel Lannister, later briefly known as Lord Lancel Lannister, is a supporting antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and its television adaptation Game of Thrones.
Introduced as a squire to King Robert I Baratheon, he later becomes a knight after conspiring along with Queen Cersei Lannister to have him killed during a hunt. After a slow recovery and nearly dying from the Battle of the Blackwater, he confesses his crimes to the High Septon, strengthens his religious beliefs, and eventually renounces his lordship, his lands and titles, his wealth, and his marriage and joins the Faith Militant as a holy knight of Order of the Warrior's Sons.
In the television series, in which the Faith Militant is portrayed differently and a single poorly-equipped order, Lancel becomes known as Brother Lancel.
He was portrayed by Eugene Simon.
Biography[]
Lancel Lannister was born in the year 282 AC in the Westerlands, one of the seven realms that made up the unified Seven Kingdoms of the continent of Westeros. House Lannister were an ancient and powerful noble family that ruled over the Westerlands from their ancestral castle Casterly Rock on the western coast of Westeros. They were considered the wealthiest family in the Seven Kingdoms. Lancel's father was Ser Kevan Lannister, younger brother to the head of House Lannister Lord Tywin Lannister, and his mother was Dorna of House Swyft, a knightly family of the Westerlands sworn in servitude to House Lannister. The humorless Lancel inherited his mother's devotion to the Seven and always said his prayers regularly.
Kevan and Dorna went on to have three more children: two twin sons named Willem Lannister and Martyn Lannister born between 285 and 287 AC, and a daughter named Janei Lannister born in either 296 AC or 297 AC. He served as a squire to Robert I Baratheon, along with his cousin Tyrek Lannister, before making him drunk with strongwine during a hunt, which ultimately led to his death. Afterwards, he was knighted by one of Cersei Lannister's knights, before being forced to serve as Tyrion's double agent. He hired the Kettleblack brothers for both Cersei and Tyrion. He was severely injured during the Battle of the Blackwater, while fighting against Stannis Baratheon's forces.
For his role in the war, he was granted lordship of Darry and all its lands and incomes. After the Red Wedding he was wed by Amerei Frey, in order to strengthen his claim on Darry through Ami's line from her mother, Mariya Darry. After his recovery, Lancel fully embraced the Faith of the Seven, eventually renouncing his lordship and to consummate his marriage. After a heated quarrel with his father Kevan about his life's choices, he returned to King's Landing and joined the Noble and Puissant Order of the Warrior's Sons, one of the Faith Militant's military orders, becoming a knight sworn to the Gods and the High Septon.
Quotes[]
By Lancel[]
“ | Your brother's likely dead. He was on the bridge of boats when it broke apart, we think. Ser Mandon's likely gone as well, and no one can find the Hound. Gods be damned, Cersei, why did you have them fetch Joffrey back to the castle? The gold cloaks are throwing down their spears and running, hundreds of them. When they saw the king leaving, they lost all heart. | „ |
~ Lancel to Cersei Lannister. |
“ | Cersei: Bring him inside Maegor's now. Lancel: No! We'll have the Mud Gate all over again. Let him stay where he is, he's the king— Cersei: He's my son. You claim to be a Lannister as well, cousin, prove it. Osfryd, why are you standing there? Now means today. [...] Lancel: Cersei, if we lose the castle, Joffrey will be killed in any case, you know that. Let him stay, I'll keep him by me, I swear— Cersei: Get out of my way. [slams her open palm into Lancel's wound]. |

“ | He was a rare spirit, pure and brave and innocent, untouched by all the evils of the world. I am a sinner, with much and more to atone for. | „ |
~ Lancel Lannister. |
“ | Lancel: I was angry with Her Grace after the battle, but the High Septon said I must forgive her. Jaime: You confessed your sins to His High Holiness, did you? Lancel: He prayed for me when I was wounded. He was a good man. Jaime: Lancel, you’re a bloody fool. Lancel: You are not wrong, but my folly is behind me, ser. I have asked the Father Above to show me the way, and he has. I am renouncing this lordship and this wife. Hardstone is welcome to the both of them, if he likes. On the morrow I will return to King's Landing and swear my sword to the new High Septon and the Seven. I mean to take vows and join the Warrior's Sons. |

About Lancel[]
“ | Lancel was one of them, yet somehow she still could not bring herself to wish him dead. I am soft and weak and stupid, just as Joffrey says. I should be killing him, not helping him. | „ |
~ Thoughts of Sansa Stark, while helping a near-dying Lancel. |
“ | Kevan: Lancel has told me how brave you were, Tyrion. He speaks very highly of you. Tyrion: [thought: He'd better, or I'll have a few things to say of him.] My good cousin is too kind. His wound is healing, I trust? Kevan: One day he seems stronger, the next... it is worrisome. Your sister often visits his sickbed, to lift his spirits and pray for him. Tyrion's thoughts: But is she praying that he lives, or dies? Cersei had made shameless use of their cousin, both in and out of bed; a little secret she no doubt hoped Lancel would carry to his grave now that Father was here and she no longer had need of him. |
