Valued for their magical powers, the elves were hunted, captured and kept prisoners by warring Land Barons. The Barons forced the elves to use their magic in order to gain more power for themselves.

Most elves were in captivity for centuries.

~ Text in a book, describing the heinous actions the Land Barons did towards the elves.

The Land Barons are the overarching antagonists of the 2020 film The Christmas Chronicles 2. They're a band of greedy humans who had hunted, captured and imprisoned a vast number of elves, for the purpose of draining the magic, long before Santa Claus had recuited them for his work in the North Pole.

Biography[]

Saint Nicholas was a bishop who'd go around to numerous houses delivering small presents, and giving away everything he had to children, becoming a local hero. Over the years that followed, the legend of Saint Nicholas and his selfless deeds and actions quickly became well-known across the world eventually reaching the Mountain Elves they were hiding high in the mountains of Turkey.

For centuries, the Land Barons hunted the elves for their magic powers, captured them to the point where they were becoming endangered and kept them prisoners forcing the elves to use their magic in order to gain more power for themselves. Most elves were in captivity for centuries, and the Barons' mistreatment of them would lead to the elves being suspicious of all humans. The elves had dismissed the legend of St. Nick as a fantasy, but one young elf named Belsnickel was certain that Nick was the key to an ancient elfin prophecy about a man who would be king of the elves, who would one day lead them to safety. Belsnickel brought Nick to his father, The Forest Elf leader Hakan, who lead St. Nick into a clearing where hundreds of elves were gathered. But unlike the elves from the present day North Pole, these were a rough, wild and ragged bunch. Hakan (the oldest elf) was stern, but he hoped that if Nick truly were the one, he'd show him a special magic and would be capable of channeling the Star of Bethlehem's power. He'd proven that he did indeed wield the magic and was able to ignite the star. It was at that point that Saint Nicholas had became The King of the Elves and earn his alias as Santa Claus. Santa had led the elves on a mystical journey to an unknown land where they could all live together in peace and where Christmas would truly endure, this land was the North Pole.

It's currently unknown whatever happened to the Land Barons and whether the team had ever managed to achieve their goal, although considering they attacked the elves over 1,700 years ago, it's highly suggested they're all long deceased, unless some of the members had gained immortality from either the shield in the North Pole, or the elves' magic.

Trivia[]

  • The Land Barons are considered the overarching antagonists of the franchise, since them imprisoning, capturing and hunting the elves to near extinction, plus extracting some of them of their magic, is what led to the elves' distrust of humanity (aside from Santa Claus and his wife), and the reason were all hostile towards Vincent and his goons as well as initally hostile towards Kate and Teddy Pierce.
    • Another way is that they're indirectly responsible for Belsnickel's turn to darkness and most of the events in the second film. For context, Belsnickel was one of the many elves they had captured, imprisoned and nearly extracted for his magic, and when none of the other elves believed in St. Nick and his legendary good deads, Belsnickel -- despite sharing the elves' hatred of humans -- was the one who came to Nick's aid and took him to his father, Hakan (the Forest Elf leader), who lead St. Nick into a clearing where Nick would power the star of Bethlehem, gain his mystical powers, rescue the surviving elves, become their leader, and slowly morph into the famous Christmas icon we all know and love. But after a certain amout of time passed, Belsnickel would begin to feel underappreciated by his co-bosses when he became a teenager, despite being extremely popular, and go on a naughtiness/mischief streak. In retrospect, Belsnickel would have a semi-valid reason to feel underappreciated considering he was the reason Santa was in the position he was, but he rarely -- if ever -- gets any credit for it.
