~ Language upon entering Phase 3

Language, nicknamed Lan, is a supporting antagonist in the anime/manga series Undead Unluck, serving as the main antagonist of the Language arc. The eighth of the "Ten Superior Rules", she is the embodiment of the concept of language.

Appearance[]

Lan's Phase 1 appearance is unknown.

In Phase 2, Lan resembles a small female human with fair skin and large, dark green eyes. She has small, thick eyebrows. Her black hair is long and straight in the back, with braids around her temples. She wears a pair of glasses with half-circle-shaped frames, as well as a black dress with a white collar, cuffs and a triangular pattern at the bottom of the skirt. She also wears a strange dark grey crown resembling the bottom two floors of a stone tower, possibly inspired by depictions of the biblical Tower of Babel. A small bang peeks out from under her crown in the middle of her forehead. While Lan usually has a calm, cute expression, she is able to twist her face into a more monstrous form with notably sharp teeth. She is often seen carrying or reading from an unidentified book.

Her Phase 3 form greatly resembles an larger, more mature version of her Phase 2 self. Her crown now resembles a full tower, her eyes are smaller and narrower with more noticeable eyelashes, the small bang on her forehead has been split in two, and her glasses are gone. She also appears to have a bit of lipstick on. The white collar and cuffs on her dress appear less rounded, with a triangular pattern similar to that on her skirt. She appears to make her teeth sharp more often in Phase 3.

After being struck by Feng's attack using his soul, the right side of Lan's face is noticeably damaged. A large amount of skin has been burnt off, part of her crown has crumbled, and her right eye appears damaged beyond use. This damage persisted when she reverted from Phase 3 to Phase 2.

Personality[]

Lan initially appears to be a peaceful bookworm, more interested in reading than whatever is going on around her. However, underneath her calm exterior Lan is cruel, callous and prideful. She thinks very little of humans, frequently underestimating them, and tends to get outright offended if one manages to defeat or even damage her. However, she is able to recognize when a human has dangerous potential and will move to kill them; even at the potential cost of her own life. She will kill without hesitation, and threatens to cause the collapse of society if she doesn't get her way. Lan tends to speak in the third person.

Her ego was shattered upon being defeated by Nico Vorgeil, driving her to become obsessed with getting her revenge and, by her own admission, fall in love with him. She appears to have a small amount of honor in regards to her revenge, as she wanted to beat Nico at his full power. Rather than fighting Nico directly, she chose to engage him in a linguistical game with a potentially fatal outcome, during which she reinforced the importance of imagination and romanticism over logic.

Biography[]

During the 100th loop, Language is fought and defeated by Nico Vorgeil using his Negator ability Unforgettable. Language is taken aback, stating that she has never lost to a Negator other than Unjustice. When Nico asks how Language knows Juiz, Language realizes that Nico is unaware of the loops. As she fades away, she declares that she'll remember Nico. As a Master Rule, Language's rule remains after her death. The reward for her defeat, however, is the unification of all languages into English, leaving Negators the only ones with any memory of the concept of different languages.

Language, along with the other 101 Master Rule UMAs, is revived for the next loop; loop 101. In this particular loop, the Ten Superior Rules are prevented from leaving their Master Room inside the Sun by Andy blocking their escape. On September 30, 2015, the Ten Superior Rules are informed by Apocalypse that the gate to Earth will be open for three minutes, and that any Master Rule who can reach Earth will be eligible to partake in the next set of quests and fight humanity. Andy once again battles the Superior Rules, allowing Language and Beast to escape so he can focus on battling Soul.

In order to prevent humans from learning too much about souls, and how to use souls to battle UMAs, Language is sent to kill a human with an "advanced understanding of souls." To Language's delight, her target Ichico Nemuri is protected by Nico Vorgeil, giving her a chance to get her revenge on him. She also uses her powers to prevent Fuuko Izumo and her group from using any language, making them unable to communicate their own recent discoveries into souls.

Attacking Nico and Ichico in their lab, Language declares that for the past 4.6 billion years she never forgot her disgrace at being defeated. While Nico is initially confused, this incarnation of him is aware of the loops and quickly puts together that his previous self fought Language. Language, on the other hand, is shocked when she realizes Nico has not gained Unforgettable yet in this loop. Feeling her revenge would be hollow without Nico at full power, she attempts to grant him the ability by kickstarting his tragedy. Realizing that Ichico's death is the most likely source of his Unforgettable-granting tragedy, she fires a projectile from her book to pierce Ichico's chest. However, Ichico manages to astral project out of her body before her death, keeping her alive until Nico can repair her body. Nico is unable to see Ichico's astral projection due to not believing in souls. Language attempts to convince Ichico to die, claiming that she is useless and her death will only make Nico stronger, but Ichico refuses. Language then uses Apocalypse to relay a message to Fuuko Izumo, current leader of the Union; make Nico and Ichico the two allowed participants of the quest to neutralize Language, or else Language would spread her language nullification to the entire world and cause mass chaos and destruction. Fuuko accepts, making the fight between Nico and Ichico vs Language official.

Language challenges Nico to a game of Shiritori, with two added stipulations. Firstly, every turn the player may add another language to the game; any of the 7 000 confirmed languages in the current loop are allowed. If no language is added, the most commonly spoken language is automatically added. Secondly, any words used will be manifested using the player's imagination; the manifestations will clash and attempt to kill the other player. Nico's relative lack of imagination made his manifestations weaker than Language's, but he used his own knowledge of science to counteract her. However, after a few rounds he realizes that making Language lose through the rule that disallows ending a word with "n" is nigh impossible, as that only applies if the Japanese translation ends in the syllable "n." Furthermore, it quickly becomes apparent that imagination is more important than logic, giving Language the edge over Nico and Ichico as creatures from myth and fantasy start being summoned. During this, Nico starts seeing Ichico's astral projection, and realizes that the imaginary manifestations are able to damage her soul.

Eventually, Ichico uses her and Nico's turn to summon Feng Kowloon, adding him as the third official participant in battling Language. Feng hits Language's summoned dragon with an axe kick while still asleep, and quickly destroys it when he's brought up to speed on the situation. Not long after, Language ascends to her Phase 3, and adds a rule to the Shiritori game where each player declares two words. As Feng fights Language's manifestations, she realizes the danger he poses and decides she has to kill him as well before he fully grasps how to wield his soul as a weapon. After a few more clashes, Ichico and Feng both sacrifice themselves to trigger Nico's tragedy and unlock Unforgettable; Apocalypse is also summoned to give Nico an immense amount of knowledge through his "information attack." Impressed by Nico being able to handle Apocalypse's information attack without his brain overloading, Language admits that she's in love with him. Nico uses one of his turns to force Language to truthfully explain whether resurrected souls will be the same entities as those that died. When he then uses his second word to resurrect Ichico and Feng, Language is initially dismissive and mocks Nico for wasting a turn. However, Feng's resurrection granted him insight into souls, allowing him to easily overpower Language's summons.

Realizing she's outmatched, Language decides that her last word will be Supernova Explosion, causing a gigantic explosion from within her Sun creation with the intent of blowing up Nico, Ichico, Feng and herself. Before the explosion, Nico uses his imagination and the previously created Science to build a massive cannon: the Super-Dreadnought Union Lethal Weapon Superior Buster Soul Version. Language points out that attempting to to push her and Sun out of range won't work due to the immense size of a supernova. However, Nico uses his turn to create a wormhole leading into the Master Rules' chamber inside the sun. With Feng adding his soul power into the cannon's blast, the exploding Sun is forced through the portal and into the Master Chamber (much to the shock of the other Master Rules). Before the portal closes, Language apologizes to her fellow Master Rule Soul for losing.

After the portal closes, Sun dies, and its connection to Lan's soul transfers the damage to her. As Language falls to the ground, she is reduced to only her core. Despite her condition, she expresses her enjoyment of the game with Nico. Nico summons a weapon to prepare to kill Language, but she uses her last turn on the word "wedding" to have Nico and Ichico marry each other. As the Japanese translation for wedding, Kekkon, ends in an n-sound, Language loses the Shiritori game and disintegrates.

Quotes[]

I never forgot, Nico Vorgeil. Just like you, for the past 4.6 billion years, I have not forgotten that moment of disgrace for a single second.
~ Lan, appearing before Nico in loop 101.
Hey. Why won't you die for Lan and the others? You won't be able to throw a single attack in that state. On top of that, your movements are too slow. You see how useless of a negator you are, don't you? Listen. If you die, Nico will grow stronger. More than strong enough to fight with Lan. So, you should just die. That's the better optio-
~ Lan, after Ichico survives her attack.
Apocalypse. You can make that happen, right? Ask Fuuko Izumo. Tell her to grant these two seats this instant, or I'll magnify the effects of the language that is currently active and cause the collapse of civilization.
~ Lan forcing Fuuko to let Nico and Ichico fight her.
I assume you imagined that wall to be rather sturdy, but remember... romanticism trumps logic.
~ Lan after shattering Nico's nigh-unbreakable black metal wall.
Imagination is important.
~ Lan
