Laramie Corp., also known as the Laramie Gang, Laramie Boys or Laramies, are supporting antagonists in Red Dead Redemption 2. They are a mercenary gang hired out by rich landowners to help them buy more land through any means necessary.
History[]
The Laramie Gang are paid thugs active in the state of West Elizabeth. They are hired out by rich landowners looking to buy more land, with the purpose of finding a way to force smaller landowners to sell. They start out with intimidation, theft and destruction of property, but are willing to use whatever means may be necessary to force landowners to sell and will not hesitate to kill those who get in their way.
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
By 1907, the Laramies have been hired out by Abel Atherton to force David Geddes to hand Pronghorn Ranch over to him. John Marston first encounters them when he delivers a supply wagon to Pronghorn Ranch. Two Laramie thugs arrive and begin harassing ranch foreman Tom Dickens before stealing the supply wagon. John chases the two Laramies down on horseback and boards the wagon before throwing both of them off and driving back into the ranch with the wagon, prompting Geddes to hire him as a ranch hand.
Soon after, the gang's leader and two of his men visit the ranch and begin threatening ranch hand Abe, threatening to start killing people if Geddes doesn't sell. The gang leader fires his gun near Abe's feet and tells him he'll be the first to die. John intervenes and insults the Laramies, calling them vermin, and a fight breaks out. John easily beats the gang leader and pummels him until Abigail Roberts intervenes and tells John to let him go. The gang leader threatens to return and leaves with his men.
A few days later, the Laramies attack the ranch, kill a ranch hand, set the stables on fire and steal the cattle. In retaliation, John and several other ranch hands attack Hanging Dog Ranch, where the Laramies are holed up. In the ensuing shootout the ranch hands manage to wipe out all the Laramies on the ranch and recover the cattle while John corners the gang leader in the barn and kills him with his own shotgun.
Despite the deaths of most of the membership at the Hanging Dog Ranch shootout, the Laramies remain active in certain areas of West Elizabeth. They continue to inhabit Hanging Dog Ranch and can be encountered in other parts of Big Valley, and will attack the player on sight. Bart Cavanaugh, a member of the gang, is wanted in the town of Strawberry for assault, intimidation and destruction of property and can be killed or arrested for a bounty of $60.
Trivia[]
- The Laramies appear to be based on the real-life Wyoming Stock Growers Association, a similar group formed to represent the interests of cattlemen which used armed men to eliminate cattle rustlers and independent ranchers.
- Some have theorized that the gang is led by Mayor of Strawberry Nicholas Timmins. During Bart Cavanaugh's bounty mission, Sheriff Vernon Farley tells the player that the Mayor has a "strange tolerance" for the Laramies and does not usually allow him to pursue them, but has signed off on Cavanaugh's bounty after he went too far by assaulting a prominent rancher's daughter. He later tells Cavanaugh that his boss got him arrested, suggesting that the boss either has some sway over Timmins or is Timmins himself. A random encounter where the player delivers a lost tourist to Strawberry also has the tourist claim that Timmins is behaving suspiciously and suggest that the player "look into that gabbing mayor".
