~ Larry Barese's thoughts on his house arrest; his most famous line. |
Lawrence "Larry Boy" Barese is a supporting character in the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.
He is a caporegime of the DiMeo Crime Family and the primary leader of the Barese Crew. He has a close connection with the boss of the family Tony Soprano and is the cousin of Albert "Ally Boy" Barese, another high-ranking mobster. Throughout the show however he is mostly seen getting arrested for multiple charges and doesn't have an extremely important role in the story.
He was portrayed by Tony Darrow.
Biography[]
Larry Barese first appears as a high-ranking and extremely notable caporegime in the DiMeo Crime Family, overseeing various illegal activities, including bookmaking, drug trafficking, illegal gambling and much more. He is shown to have a close friendship with Tony Soprano and the rest of the family, with him having no real problems with any mobsters in the series. His character is also involved in traditional mob operations, such as loan sharking and extortion. He is also the godson of Benny Fazio, a future soldier in the DiMeo Family.
In Season 2, Larry's criminal activities catch up with him as the FBI arrests him along with several other mobsters during a raid at the Green Grove Retirement Community. This event is part of a larger crackdown on organized crime figures. Larry's arrest is significant as it marks the beginning of legal troubles for many characters in the series. This is also important to the overall story as Ally Boy takes over the Barese Crew as acting capo while he is gone.
Even though Larry is put on trial for charges of racketeering and fraud, the trial is claimed as being a mistrial and Larry is instead put under house arrest. Despite being under house arrest, Larry continues to exert influence within the crime family. He is seen wearing an ankle monitor and is restricted to his home, but he still manages to communicate with other members of the family and stay involved in their affairs. However, for the most part Larry's character takes a back seat during this and isn't shown at all through the second and third seasons.
In Season 4, Larry's legal situation worsens. He is indicted on charges of racketeering and faces a long prison sentence. This puts him in a precarious position, as he must decide whether to cooperate with the authorities or maintain his loyalty to the crime family. Larry ultimately chooses to keep quiet, adhering to the Mafia's code of silence.
In Season 6, Larry Boy is approached by Vito Spatafore, who had taken over as capo of the Aprile Crew and asks him if he could take over as acting boss while Tony is in a coma, however this never goes any further. Around this time, Larry begins to violate the restrictions of his house arrest for a while due to his wishes of socializing with his fellow gangsters. Later in the final season, Larry Boy is once again arrested by U.S. Marshals for violating the restrictions of his house arrest to see the premiere of Christopher Moltisanti's film, "Cleaver". Larry's character doesn't have a significant presence in the later seasons, but his earlier actions and decisions continue to have ripple effects within the crime family. His arrest and legal battles highlight the constant threat of law enforcement that looms over the DiMeo Crime Family.
Trivia[]
- While the majority of capos always seem to meet their maker by the end or rat out others for the FBI, Larry is different as instead of having bad luck by getting murdered or even becoming an informant, his bad luck takes the form of him always getting arrested, which limits his appearance in the show to only a few episodes.
- In June 2009, Tony Darrow, Larry's actor was charged with extortion in a 2004 incident along with Gambino crime family soldier Joseph "Joey Boy" Orlando and associate Giovanni "Johnny" Monteleone. Darrow was accused of ordering the maiming of a man in Monticello, New York, who owed money to a loan shark. Darrow and Orlando both pleaded guilty in federal court to these charges in February 2011, in exchange for a sentence of up to 33 months.
