Larry Marvick was a scientist and engineer who had been one of the designers of the Enterprise. He was later assigned to work with the Medusans, a race of expert navigators whose appearance would drive any human who looked at them insane, in an attempt to find a way to use their navigational abilities aboard starships. This led to him working closely with Doctor Miranda Jones, a blind and telepathic human woman who had become the aide to the Medusan ambassador Kollos, and falling in love with her. He tried to convince her to stay on Earth with him but Miranda rejected his overtures, telling him she couldn't love him the way he wanted.
Marvick accompanied Miranda and Kollos aboard the Enterprise when the ship was assigned to transport Kollos home, with Miranda intending to go with him. Marvick beamed aboard first and, on finding Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Commander Scott present in the transporter room with Commander Spock, warned them that neither of them could be there when Kollos beamed aboard. Scotty was interested in discussing the Enterprise engines with him but Marvick seemed withdrawn and rebuffed his attempts at conversation.
At a subsequent dinner to welcome the new guests, Marvick was increasingly detached, speaking little as most of the other men present flattered Miranda. Afterwards, he went to see Miranda in her quarters and again tried to get her to stay with him, while she continued to reject him. She then sensed that he was planning to murder someone. Marvick pulled away from her and headed to Kollos' quarters with a phaser, intending to kill the ambassador. However, on catching side of Kollos, Marvick was driven insane.
Desperate to escape the images plaguing him, Marvick headed to engineering where Scotty happily gave him access to the engines. A shipwide warning that Marvick was dangerous arrived too late as Marvick took the ship to high warp and plunged it through the galactic barrier. Kirk and Miranda arrived and tried to calm him but Marvick collapsed dead as a result of the trauma.
