Johan Svensson, better known as Lars Meier, is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Tatiana) of the TV series Killing Eve. He is a proclaimed revolutionary and former lover of Carolyn Martens who later became a founder and high-ranking agent of the Twelve, secretly maintaining its operations and wishing to overthrow the world order by sowing chaos.

He was portrayed by Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson. In a flashback sequence, he is portrayed by Siggi Ingvarsson.

History[]

Early Life[]

Originally a country bumpkin from Iceland who fancied himself a revolutionary, Johan Svensson moved to England during the Cold War to unite a number of likeminded individuals to sow chaos and overthrow the world order. He managed to meet 11 people, including Karl and Janice, the latter of whom became his girlfriend. However, despite being close with the group members, he was actually disliked for his arrogance and intolerable personality. During a gathering, he tried to find a name for the group, including "The Socialist Squad", "Anarchists With Attitude" and "The Disruptors". After Janice joined, she proposed "The 12", named after the founding members and this was accepted.

Over the next few weeks which consisted of mostly parties and gatherings, including one at Janice's house, Johan started noticing something between Janice and Karl and suspected she was cheating on him. At some point, he confronted them at a lake and threatened them at gunpoint. He attacked Karl and the two eventually fought as Janice tried to get a weapon. As Johan had Karl pinned down and tried to shoot him, Janice hit him with an oar and he fell into the lake. He then swam back up with the gun still in his hand and the two repeatedly hit over the head with oars and he sank, never to be seen again. After police investigated, he was declared dead.

Unbeknownst to the group, all of whom had moved on with their lives, Johan was still alive. He changed his legal name to "Lars Meier", adopted a German accent and founded the Twelve. It is assumed that he became one of its head leaders and had again gathered 11 other likeminded but powerful individuals, or more likely he had instead gathered 12 people and put them in charge while he simply became a Keeper to protect their identities so his goals would be realized. At some point, he married a woman named Fernanda and despite her taking constant photos, he stayed out of the spotlight to keep his status from being unveiled. Eventually he divorced her, leaving her heartbroken.

Reunion with Carolyn[]

Many years later, Lars returned to his hotel in Cuba with several other friends where he recognized Carolyn. Terrified that she now knew he was alive, he bolted out of the building and rode a motorcycle away. He retreated to Karolina's father's cabin, thinking that Carolyn won't figure out where he could hide. Unfortunately, Carolyn did in fact work out where he was and arrived at the cabin to speak to him. Having still to forgiven her for trying to kill him, she answered the door with his gun. Although he was tempted to shoot her, Carolyn convinced him not to and walked in. While sitting down, Carolyn explains that someone is killing his peers to get to him and she would tell him if he tells her who ordered a hit on her son Kenny.

Trivia[]

  • According to Carolyn, Lars is apparently one of the Twelve's leaders, which is supported by the contents of his notebook. However, Hélène claims that Lars has a superior which he would rather than die than betray, meaning that he could actually be a Keeper.
  • He is arguably the Greater-Scope Villain of the series given that he originally conceived the idea of forming the Twelve, which he eventually did after being presumed dead.
  • His surname Meier, according to Yusuf, is pronounced "May-er."
